Motor oil is the lifeblood of the engine — it lubricates moving parts, carries heat away, and traps combustion byproducts until you drain it out. Pick the viscosity your owner's manual specifies (0W-20, 5W-30, whatever's printed on the oil cap) and the spec it calls for (dexos, API SP, ACEA C3, etc.). Synthetic costs more but goes 7,500–10,000 miles between changes; conventional is cheaper but wants swapping every 3–5k.
