Pennzoil is one of the oldest motor oil brands in the United States, founded in 1913. Since its acquisition by Shell in 2002, the brand has been positioned as the premium tier of Shell's lubricants portfolio. The Platinum and Ultra Platinum lines are made using Shell's proprietary PurePlus Technology — a gas-to-liquid (GTL) process that converts natural gas into pure base oil molecules. The company claims this results in fewer impurities than conventional crude-derived base oils. The product carries API SP + ILSAC GF-7A certification with GM dexos1 Gen 3 approval, making it compatible with most 2010+ passenger vehicles. The conventional Yellow Bottle line is a different product — conventional mineral-base oil, not GTL synthetic — and should not be confused with the Platinum tier.
