Only when: splash risk
Translated from the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
No H318 or H319 at mixture level · SDS §2 explicitly 'Not considered hazardous by OSHA HazCom Standard.' Safety glasses address the physical splash risk during oil changes, not a chemical eye-hazard classification.
CarCareTruth publishes the cited sources verbatim and does not advise what action a user should take. Consult the full SDS before use.
Only when: prolonged use
Beyond SDS: translated from the ingredient chemistry
No H315 or H317 at mixture level. The retail listing carries a California Prop 65 warning, though neither the listing nor SDS §15 names the listed chemical. Brief incidental contact during a normal oil change is the standard exposure. The situational tier reflects that unresolved Prop 65 warning, not a mixture-level GHS skin-hazard classification.

Only when: in enclosed space · prolonged use
Translated from the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
SDS §8 calls for respirator selection 'based on the hazard and potential for exposure,' generic language with no specific inhalation hazard named at mixture level. §2 carries no H-codes and 'Not classified'; §11 rates inhalation as negligible hazard at ambient/normal handling temperatures and states the product is not expected to be a respiratory sensitizer. This is a ventilation precaution for working in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space, not a mixture-level respiratory hazard.
CarCareTruth publishes the cited sources verbatim and does not advise what action a user should take. Consult the full SDS before use.
No PPE specified in published sources for ventilation. Absence does not imply “not needed” — consult the full Safety Data Sheet.
PPE tiers translate the manufacturer’s SDS and U.S. regulatory standards. Not professional safety advice. How we report safety.
Scope of these PPE tiers. The tiers on this page translate the product's Safety Data Sheet where one is published, plus its ingredient chemistry, into a comparable rating. They describe a formulation, not a situation: a tier is not a safety determination for any specific user, task, quantity, or environment. The manufacturer's label and use instructions govern how the product is handled. Where the product is used at work, the employer's PPE program and hazard assessment under 29 CFR 1910.132 decide what protection is selected, not this page.

TL;DR GM dexosD-licensed 0W-20 with the deepest European OEM approval roster of the three dexosD candidates reviewed: BMW Longlife 04, Mercedes-Benz 229.31, Porsche A40, VW 504 00/508 00, ACEA C3/C5/C6. PAO-blend (Group III/IV) base stock confirmed from the 2023 SDS. Mobil claims a 12,000-mile drain interval; no independent UOA data for the LM2 Duramax application exists to confirm it. Prop 65 warning applies.
Mobil 1 ESP X2 0W-20 is ExxonMobil's entry in the GM dexosD category. The SDS (version 1.01, November 2023) Section 3 identifies a PAO component (1-decene tetramer/trimer hydrogenated, CAS 68649-12-7) alongside a GTL or Group III+ heavy-distillate base (CAS 848301-69-9), a Group III/IV PAO-blend, one step above the pure Group III base stocks used by some dexosD competitors.
The OEM approval list is the broadest in this comparison: GM dexosD, BMW Longlife 04, Mercedes-Benz 229.31, Porsche A40, Volkswagen 504 00/508 00, ACEA C3/C5/C6, Fiat 9.55535-S2, and API SL through SQ, confirmed from mobil.com (2026-07-01). The simultaneous ACEA C3/C5/C6 coverage is unusual; C3 covers older European diesel applications, C5 the current low-viscosity fuel-economy spec, and C6 the ultra-low SAPS extended-drain spec. Covering all three in one product provides versatility for owners with mixed fleets.
Mobil's manufacturer page claims a 12,000-mile drain interval or 1 year, following OEM warranty intervals. For LM2 Duramax owners, the GM Oil Life Monitor (OLM) is the governing drain signal, it is calibrated to the diesel combustion chemistry and typically yields intervals around 7,500 miles under normal use.
Best for LM2 Duramax owners who also have European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, VW/Audi) and want one oil that covers the whole fleet's 0W-20 spec requirements. It runs a PAO-blend base stock and holds real OEM licenses (GM dexosD plus the BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and VW approvals listed above), so the spec coverage is verifiable, not marketing copy.
Available on Amazon in a 6-pack (6 quarts) as of 2026-07-01. If single-quart availability is the priority, check Walmart or the ExxonMobil product locator, the ESP X2 is a European-origin product and availability varies by region.
The SDS (version 1.01, November 2023) §2 explicitly states: "Not considered hazardous by OSHA HazCom Standard... Not classified", no GHS signal word, no H-codes at mixture level. H304 aspiration hazard does not apply: KV40 = 39.8 mm²/s (from mobil.com TDS) is above the CLP viscosity exemption threshold, and SDS §11 affirmatively states "Not expected to be an aspiration hazard. Based on physico-chemical properties of the material."
The Prop 65 warning is confirmed via the product listing (API proposition_65_warning: true). What the warning names is not something we can pin down: SDS §15 tags no ingredient with a California Prop 65 code. The ZDDP anti-wear additive appears in §15 only under the EPA Clean Water Act Section 307 priority-pollutant list, which is a water-discharge inventory and not a Prop 65 listing.
SDS §12 states "Not expected to be harmful to aquatic organisms", the affirmative negative statement for this mixture. Used oil should nonetheless go to collection, automotive retailers and municipal hazardous-waste facilities accept it.
Yes. Mobil 1 ESP X2 0W-20 is GM dexosD licensed and meets the requirement for the 3.0L Duramax diesel (LM2 2020-2022, LZ0 2023-present) in the T1XX Sierra 1500 and Silverado 1500. It also carries BMW Longlife 04, Mercedes-Benz 229.31, Porsche A40, and VW 504 00/508 00 approvals, making it one of the most broadly approved dexosD 0W-20 oils for mixed-fleet households with European vehicles.
ESP stands for 'Engine System Protection' · Mobil's name for their low-SAPS diesel and European gasoline oil formulation line. The 'X2' designation indicates this is the 0W-20 viscosity grade variant in the ESP line, optimized for the ultra-low SAPS requirements of modern diesels with diesel particulate filters (DPF). The X2 formulation uses a PAO-blend base stock (Group III/IV) rather than pure Group III, which is disclosed in ExxonMobil's SDS Section 3.
Mobil's product page claims 12,000 miles or 1 year, following OEM warranty intervals. For the LM2 Duramax specifically, follow the Oil Life Monitor (OLM) · GM calibrates it for the diesel combustion chemistry and DPF regeneration cycles. Owners typically see OLM-suggested intervals around 7,500 miles under normal mixed driving. No independent used-oil analysis (UOA) data was found for this specific product in the LM2 Duramax application as of 2026-07-01.
The SDS (version 1.01, November 2023) Section 3 lists a 1-decene tetramer/trimer hydrogenated component (CAS 68649-12-7), which is a polyalphaolefin (PAO) Group IV synthetic, alongside a heavy distillates component (CAS 848301-69-9) consistent with a GTL or Group III+ base stock. This is a PAO-blend formulation (Group III/IV), not a pure Group III mineral synthetic · a meaningful distinction for oxidation stability and low-temperature performance.
The listing for Mobil 1 ESP X2 Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil carries a California Prop 65 warning. Mobil 1 ESP X2 Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil is a working automotive fluid rather than a passive part, so the warning points at the formulation itself. The manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet is the primary source for what is in it: the hazard classification and the PPE tiers on this page are translated from that sheet, and the full SDS is linked from the safety panel. California requires the warning whenever exposure to any of roughly 900 listed substances is possible. It does not name which substance applies to a given product, and it states no dose or risk level, so it is not on its own a measure of how hazardous this fluid is in normal use.
