TL;DR A full-synthetic 0W-40 built for European cars, carrying the approvals those engines actually require: Mercedes-Benz 229.5, BMW Longlife-01, VW 502 00/505 00, and Porsche A40, on top of current API SP gasoline certification. It is a heavier, full-SAPS Euro grade, so it is not ILSAC fuel-economy certified by design. Castrol prints no fixed mileage drain claim on this bottle; run it to your car's OEM service interval.
Castrol EDGE Euro 0W-40 A3/B4 is a true full synthetic, built on a polyalphaolefin base stock confirmed in the safety data sheet alongside highly refined base oils. It meets the ACEA A3/B4 European performance class and current API SP gasoline certification, and carries named approvals from Mercedes-Benz (229.5), BMW (Longlife-01), Volkswagen and Audi (502 00/505 00), and Porsche (A40). Those approvals are the point of this oil: European engines are designed around a higher high-temperature shear viscosity than the lighter, fuel-economy-focused oils most American cars use, and this grade is formulated to hold that protection. Castrol does not print a fixed mileage drain claim on the Euro bottle, which matches how these cars are serviced (a condition-based interval set by the car, not a number on the jug). The safety data sheet on file was last revised in 2018, eight years old; the H-codes here reflect that revision, and the current formula is certified to API SP with the manufacturer also listing the newer API SQ tier, which postdates the SDS.
Best for owners of European cars, German marques especially, whose manuals call for an ACEA A3/B4 0W-40 with one of the named approvals above. Confirm the exact approval your owner's manual specifies before relying on this oil for warranty documentation. Skip it if your engine calls for a low-viscosity, ILSAC-certified fuel-economy oil (most modern Japanese and domestic engines specifying 0W-20 or 5W-30 ILSAC GF), because this heavier full-SAPS Euro grade is the wrong viscosity and SAPS class for those engines.
The safety data sheet classifies fresh Castrol EDGE Euro 0W-40 A3/B4 as not classified under GHS: no signal word and no hazard codes at mixture level. The California Prop 65 warning ("WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm") is required because Section 15 lists trace constituents (benzene, lead, cadmium, toluene) that California regulates; for motor oil this reflects mineral oil mist and trace components at industrial exposure levels, not pour-and-drain contact during a home oil change. The aspiration hazard that appears for the base oils in Section 11 is waived at the mixture level by the viscosity exemption, so ingestion-aspiration is not a mixture-level classification here. Safety glasses with side shields and nitrile gloves for prolonged or repeated contact are sensible during the hot-drain step. Used engine oil picks up combustion byproducts in service; IARC classifies used mineral-based crankcase oils as carrying elevated carcinogen risk from those byproducts, so avoid prolonged skin contact and wash thoroughly. Used oil goes to collection, not down the drain or on the ground, at most automotive retailers and municipal hazardous waste facilities.
It targets European gasoline (and many diesel) engines that specify an ACEA A3/B4, high-HTHS 0W-40 oil. The bottle and Castrol's product page list approvals for Mercedes-Benz (MB 229.5), BMW (Longlife-01), Volkswagen and Audi (VW 502 00/505 00), Porsche (A40), and Renault (RN0700/RN0710), and it meets Ford WSS-M2C937-A. Always confirm the exact approval your owner's manual calls for before relying on it for warranty service.
ILSAC GF certification is built around fuel economy and low high-temperature high-shear viscosity. Euro A3/B4 oils like this one are deliberately heavier and full-SAPS to meet European OEM durability and emissions-system requirements, so they are not eligible for and not certified to ILSAC GF. The absence is by design for this oil class, not a sign of a lower-quality formula.
Yes. The SDS lists a polyalphaolefin base stock (Dec-1-ene homopolymer, CAS 68037-01-4) at roughly 25 to 50 percent, which is a Group IV synthetic base, alongside highly refined base oils. That makes it a genuine full synthetic rather than a Group III oil marketed as synthetic or a synthetic blend.
The warning is required because the SDS Section 15 lists trace constituents (benzene, lead, cadmium, toluene) that California regulates. For motor oil this is associated with mineral oil mist and trace components at industrial-exposure levels, not pour-and-drain contact during a home oil change. The SDS classifies the fresh oil as not hazardous. Used oil accumulates combustion byproducts during service, so avoid prolonged skin contact with drained oil and wash thoroughly.
Follow your vehicle's OEM-specified interval, which on most European cars is a condition-based service computer reading rather than a fixed mileage. Castrol does not print a fixed mileage drain claim on this Euro bottle. There is no independent used-oil-analysis dataset specific to this exact grade that would justify extending beyond the OEM interval, so the manufacturer interval is the right call.
