Optimum, often shortened to OPT (the initials on its logo), is the car-care brand of Optimum Polymer Technologies, a chemistry company founded in 2001 in Memphis, Tennessee, and still run from there today by the same founder. That founder is Dr. David Ghodoussi, a PhD polymer and organic chemist who spent more than a decade formulating automotive paint systems before starting the company to build the correction and protection products those newer clearcoats actually needed. In 2023 the International Detailing Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame, a peer honor that says a lot about how the wider industry regards his work.
What sets Optimum apart is refreshingly simple: the products start with chemistry, not marketing. Dr. G researches, formulates, and manufactures the line in-house rather than rebranding someone else's chemistry, and the catalog stays deliberately lean, with one well-built product per job instead of a shelf of near-duplicates. The formulas tend to be concentrated, water-based, and honest about what they actually do, which is exactly the kind of brand we enjoy putting on the scorecard.

Optimum
No Rinse Wash & Shine (ONR Version 5)

Optimum's reputation rests on two genuine landmarks. The first is Optimum No Rinse, or ONR, released in 2006. It pioneered the rinseless wash: a bucket of heavily diluted concentrate whose polymers lift and encapsulate dirt so you can wipe a car clean and dry with no hose and a small fraction of the water a traditional wash uses. ONR is widely credited as the original rinseless wash, and today nearly every major detailing brand sells its own take on the idea ONR introduced. (One honest note for clarity: ONR is a rinseless wash, not a spray-on waterless wash, which is a separate and older category.)
The second landmark is Opti-Coat, the company's professional ceramic coating, alongside its consumer sibling Gloss-Coat. Opti-Coat was the first automotive ceramic coating brought to market in North America, and it is built on silicon carbide (SiC) chemistry rather than the silica (SiO2) that most products marketed as "ceramic" rely on. The professional version is applied through a certified-installer network and backed by multi-year warranties, while Gloss-Coat brings ceramic-coating protection into a bottle a careful owner can apply at home.
Around those two anchors sits a full, focused range: spray sealants like Opti-Seal, one-step polishes like Poli-Seal, the carnauba-and-polymer Optimum Car Wax, ceramic spray toppers, the Power Clean all-purpose cleaner, tire and trim dressings, and more. The line is designed to work as a system, each product formulated to layer cleanly over the next and over an Opti-Coat or Gloss-Coat base, so an owner can build a complete wash-to-protect routine without stacking chemistries that fight one another. It adds up to a science-first catalog from a company that has spent more than two decades doing a small number of things genuinely well.
Optimum earned four CarCareTruth Best of 2026 awards: our #1 ceramic coating, our #1 spray wax, our #1 rinseless wash, and our #1 compound and one-step.
