From the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
“No H335, H330, or H331 in SDS §2. Lungs-recommended is the correct tier based on the aerosol petroleum-distillate carrier (15–40% combined), H340 and H350 CMR codes at mixture level, and the aerosol mist inhalation pathway in confined spaces. Basis is carrier chemistry and CMR classification, not a GHS inhalation H-code.”

CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 18, 2026
TL;DR Stops squeaks on door hinges, garage tracks, and hood latches — community confirms it works, though the foam spray is messy. **DANGER signal word: germ cell mutagenicity (Cat 1B) and carcinogenicity (Cat 1B) at mixture level — health score 2.5 (Serious Hazard). Wear gloves; avoid inhaling the mist indoors.** California Prop 65 warning. A tube-format white lithium grease does the same job with much better health chemistry.
What it is and how it performs
Permatex 81981 deposits a grease film on door hinges, hood and trunk latches, and garage door tracks. The foam sets in a minute or two and holds in vertical gaps. The extension straw reaches hinge gaps but doesn't lock; reviewers note foam splatter on surrounding surfaces and suggest spraying onto a rag for tight spots. Community reviews confirm reliable squeak elimination. No durability claim on the label; community data is positive but lacks documented reapplication timelines.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Suits garage door tracks, exterior door hinges, and hood or trunk latches — metal-on-metal under load where a stay-in-place grease beats thin sprays. Skip it on rubber seals and plastics (petroleum carrier degrades rubber; use silicone spray instead) and on electrical connectors (use dielectric grease). Anyone working regularly in a closed garage or concerned about the CMR chemistry should pick a tube-format white lithium grease.
Safety and environmental impact
DANGER from health codes: germ cell mutagenicity Cat 1B (H340) and carcinogenicity Cat 1B (H350) at mixture level, plus aspiration toxicity Cat 1 (H304) from the petroleum-distillate carrier. Lungs-recommended is based on CMR codes and carrier chemistry — H335 is absent from SDS §2. Wear gloves; eye protection situational for spray application; ventilate in enclosed spaces. California Prop 65 confirmed. Environment 5.5 (Average) — leave-on pathway softens the score, but aerosol propellant VOC and non-biodegradable petroleum base hold it back.

Great product, multiple uses
I purchased this grease when I bought my elliptical based on all the other reviews. During assembly I applied the grease to all moving parts and have had no issues the past 2 months. I keep the elliptical in the garage and noticed the garage door was loud and squeaky. I applied the grease to the runners and hinges and it greatly reduced noises and smoothed out the action.Quick tip, when the grease is first sprayed, it is a bit thin, though not runny. If you wait a minute or two, the grease will set up and is easier to spread around.
