Solvent Naphtha (Petroleum), Heavy Aromatic

  • Aromatic solvents
  • CAS 64742-94-5

Contains aromatic hydrocarbons including naphthalene. Aspiration hazard if swallowed (H304). Reproductive toxicity data — NOAEL 35 mg/kg/day for fertility effects in rats. Vapors may cause respiratory tract irritation with repeated exposure. Not classified as a skin or eye irritant at mixture concentrations.

Heavy aromatic petroleum naphtha is a high-boiling aromatic solvent fraction derived from crude oil distillation. It contains alkylated benzenes, naphthalene, and related polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Used in penetrating oils, industrial cleaners, and coatings for its strong solvency and wicking properties. The aromatic content gives it higher solvency power than aliphatic distillates, which makes it effective at penetrating rust-oil interfaces, but also means a greater ecological footprint. Aquatic toxicity is well-documented: EC50 values below 1 mg/L for Daphnia magna place it in the "very toxic to aquatic life" range. Bioaccumulation potential is significant at log Kow 2.9–6.1. Reproductive toxicity studies on rats found fertility effects at 35 mg/kg/day (NOAEL) — the basis for the Repr. 1B classification in products where it constitutes 10–30% of the formulation. At typical end-use concentrations in aerosol penetrants, direct dermal or inhalation exposure during application is brief, but cumulative occupational exposure warrants attention.
