An oil filter wrench comes in three basic shapes. A cap-style wrench is a precisely sized socket that slips over the filter's hex flutes or nut, giving the strongest grip but only on the one filter diameter it is cut for, sold either as a single application (Motivx's Toyota and Lexus cap) or in a multi-size kit (OEMTOOLS, Orion Motor Tech, BETOOLL). A pliers-style wrench (Channellock, Tekton, WORKPRO) adjusts its jaw to fit a range of diameters, at the cost of clamping less precisely than a matched cap. A strap or claw wrench (Lisle's 60200 strap and 63600 spring-loaded claw) wraps or clamps around the filter body itself rather than gripping a flute, which is the usual answer for a filter that is badly stuck.

So which oil filter wrench is best? Start with how your filters actually come off. If a quick-lube shop over-torques your filters, be careful with a pliers wrench: the jaw geometry that adjusts to fit multiple diameters is also the geometry most likely to slip on a badly seized or glazed filter, a limitation several listings here call out directly (Channellock, Tekton, WORKPRO, Orion Motor Tech, BETOOLL). A cap-style wrench holds harder when it is the right size, which is part of why Motivx's single-application Toyota and Lexus cap is a category favorite, but a cap kit is only as good as its size chart: BETOOLL's 23-piece set tops out at 65mm, one size larger than the Toyota 64.5mm cartridge filter it is closest to, and fitment there is unconfirmed. Lisle's two swivel-grip wrenches (57030 and 53700) solve a different problem, a filter wedged somewhere a straight-handled tool cannot reach, but each covers a single fixed band under 10mm wide, so measure your filter's outside diameter before ordering.
