CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 25, 2026
TL;DR Pliers-style adjustable oil filter wrench in high carbon steel, covering 60–102mm (most spin-on filters). Holds the #1 spot in Oil Filter Wrenches on Amazon with 12,500+ reviews at 4.6 stars. Community-confirmed on cars, trucks, diesel engines, and compact tractors. No widespread slippage reports; the bent-head design helps in tighter bays, though hostile-access engines like the Subaru boxer or F-150 5.0L are unconfirmed. Direct handle; no square drive.
What it is and how it performs
Pliers-style adjustable oil filter wrench in high carbon steel, with a bent-head design and three-position slip-joint adjustment. Covers filters from 60mm to 102mm, which includes most passenger car, light truck, and diesel spin-on sizes. Operated by gripping the direct handles, not a square drive. Community-confirmed across cars, trucks, and compact tractors in 12,500+ reviews at 4.6 stars. No widespread slippage reports; one reviewer noted minor arm wobble, but no structural failures are documented. The metal jaw design marks filter housings, suitable for removal only, not for reinstalling filters being reused.
Who should buy — and who should skip it
Right pick for a home mechanic who wants a single adjustable wrench covering any spin-on filter in the 60–102mm range and prefers the leverage of a metal-jaw pliers design over a strap-style tool. The bent-head geometry and rubber grips handle most accessible filter positions without issue. Skip if your filter is confirmed in a hostile location like the Subaru boxer engine or behind the F-150 5.0L crossmember, since tight-space access on those applications has not been community-confirmed. Also skip if you plan to reuse your oil filters: the metal jaws will score the housing.
Safety and environmental impact
Physical hand tool with no chemical exposure pathway and no SDS. High carbon steel body is recyclable as scrap metal at any standard facility. No documented widespread structural failure across 12,500+ reviews; the permalock fastener addresses the conventional slip-joint pivot failure mode. No PPE is required for the wrench itself. Workshop gloves and eye protection for the oil-change task are general oil-change practice, not specific to this product.
Frequently asked questions
What size oil filters does the WORKPRO W114083A fit?▾
The W114083A is rated for filters from 2-3/8" to 4-1/2" in diameter (60mm to 102mm). This covers most passenger car, light truck, and diesel spin-on oil filters. Community reviews confirm use on a 6.7 Cummins diesel, compact tractors, and multiple passenger cars. No manufacturer-published OEM compatibility list was found as of 2026-05-24.
Does the WORKPRO W114083A work with a ratchet or drive?▾
No. The W114083A is a direct-handle pliers-style wrench with no square drive interface. It operates like channel-lock pliers, with the user gripping the handles directly. It is not compatible with a 3/8" or 1/2" ratchet or extension.
Will the WORKPRO pliers scratch or damage the oil filter?▾
The metal jaw tips will mark a filter housing in normal use. One reviewer specifically cautions against using these on filters intended for reuse — the prongs can dent or score the housing. For disposable spin-on filters being replaced (the typical use case), this is not a concern.
What is the permalock fastener on the W114083A?▾
The permalock fastener replaces the conventional nut-and-bolt pivot on the slip-joint. Standard nut-and-bolt pivots can loosen or fail over time; the permalock design eliminates that failure mode. One reviewer noted minor arm wobble, but no structural failures were documented across the available review sample.

Good Quality
I've used these pliers multiple times on several different cars and have had success in this variety of use cases. They are very simple to use and I appreciate that they can fit into a variety of different oil filter locations. The pliers have good grip on the filters, but I would be cautious in using them on any filter that you plan to reuse, seeing as the plier prongs are fully metal and will damage filters in the ordinary course of use unless you are very careful. If you plan to use pliers for filters that you will reuse or if you plan to use pliers to tighten oil filters, I would likely recommend seeking out pliers that have rubber points of contact. Seeing as I solely use these pliers to loosen and remove oil filters, they work great for me. Overall, I appreciate these pliers and find them to be of a good quality, but be sure they meet your use case.
