CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 27, 2026
TL;DR Surface-filler putty kit for prepping chips before painting — not a color-matched touch-up paint. Paint and primer are not included. The SDS carries a DANGER signal word for reproductive and organ toxicity; wear safety glasses and use this outdoors or with the garage door open.
What it is and how it performs
The glazing putty fills stone chips and scratches in metal or fiberglass, then sands flush so the surface is ready for primer and paint (both sold separately). Application is straightforward: squeeze from the tube, spread with the included plastic spreader, sand at 30 minutes. Community reviewers at 4.0 stars from 154 purchases confirm chips fill cleanly with no mixing required. The 180/320-grit sandpaper is included; some reviewers found machine polishing easier than hand-sanding. The repair is visually incomplete until primer and color coat are applied.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Good fit for owners who already have primer and touch-up paint and need the filler bundled cheaply. Skip if you expect a ready-to-go chip repair — paint and primer are not included. Also skip for chips reaching bare metal; this kit has no primer, and bare metal will rust.
Safety and environmental impact
The SDS carries DANGER driven by reproductive toxicity (Cat 1B) and organ toxicity from the aromatic solvent system. The product carries a California Prop 65 warning for cancer and reproductive harm. Wear safety glasses — H319 eye irritation is confirmed in the SDS. Work outdoors or in a ventilated garage; the solvent vapor builds up in enclosed spaces. VOC is 444 g/L per the SDS; no CARB compliance claim found.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Bondo Scratch & Rock Chip Repair Kit include touch-up paint?▾
No. This kit includes the Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty tube, one spreader, and two sheets of sandpaper (180-grit and 320-grit). Paint and primer are explicitly not included — the product listing and label both state 'paint and primer not included.' The putty fills and levels the chip so it is ready for primer and paint, which you purchase separately.
Can I use this kit on chips that have reached bare metal?▾
The kit is not designed for bare-metal chip repair without a primer step. The putty adhesion is appropriate for metal, fiberglass, and previously primed or painted surfaces, but bare metal exposed to moisture will rust if primer is skipped. Purchase an automotive spray primer separately and apply it to bare metal before applying the putty.
How big of a chip or scratch can this kit repair?▾
The kit covers approximately 80 square inches total, which is enough for multiple small chips and scratches. The three-minute working window and 30-minute sandable time are suited for smaller repairs — a single deep gouge or a series of stone chips on a panel. Larger panel-wide damage requires a body filler product rather than spot putty.
Does the DANGER signal word on the SDS mean this is dangerous to use at home?▾
The DANGER signal word is driven by the SDS classification for reproductive toxicity and organ toxicity from the aromatic solvent carrier. For a home user, the practical guidance is: work outdoors or in an open garage, not in an enclosed space where solvent vapor can build up. The product also carries a California Prop 65 warning. Wear safety glasses during application and spreading.
What grit sandpaper should I use first — 180 or 320?▾
Start with the 180-grit sheet to level the cured putty flush with the surrounding surface, then follow with 320-grit to smooth the surface before primer. The finer 320-grit reduces visible sanding scratches in the primer and paint coats applied afterward. Allow at least 30 minutes before sanding.

Easy to apply and works great
Much easier than expected to apply. I filled a couple of deep scratches easily. Using the sandpaper is a bit tricky. I ended up skipping that and using a drill, buffer pad and maguires scratch-x to buff it out.
