Brake fluid is the hydraulic fluid that transmits pedal pressure to the calipers — and it absorbs water from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and rusts the lines from the inside. Most manufacturers want it flushed every 2-3 years; you'll know it's overdue when the fluid in the reservoir looks dark brown instead of pale amber, or the pedal feels spongy after hard stops. DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 are the common glycol-based grades; never mix DOT 5 (silicone) with any of them. Check your cap before buying.
