TL;DR DOT 4 with TDS-documented dry boiling point of 637°F and wet boiling point of 401°F, both confirmed in the Motul June 2024 TDS and well above DOT 5.1 minimums. Prop 65 warning on the bottle; the SDS was not obtainable at time of scoring and health data is provisional.
Motul RBF 700 meets the DOT 4 specification under FMVSS 116, which sets minimum dry and wet boiling points of 446°F and 311°F respectively. The June 2024 Motul TDS documents 637°F dry and 401°F wet, putting it 191°F and 90°F above those minimums. Brake fluids absorb moisture over time, reducing heat resistance; the 401°F wet boiling point provides a substantial buffer above the 311°F minimum after service exposure. The fluid is labeled for both brake and hydraulic clutch systems and is not a DOT 5.1 product despite clearing those minimums; cold viscosity prevents DOT 5.1 certification. owner reviews confirm zero brake fade in documented high-performance use.
Best for track-day drivers and performance vehicle owners who need verified high heat resistance and want the convenience of DOT 4 compatibility with existing brake hardware. The documented boiling points make it a strong choice for any vehicle that sees sustained hard braking. Skip it for a stock daily driver under normal road conditions; a standard DOT 4 with documented boiling points costs less and meets the spec requirement without surplus margin.
The Motul RBF 700 SDS was not obtainable at time of scoring; chemistry data is proxied from the Motul RBF 600 SDS, which classified the mixture as not hazardous under OSHA HCS. A Prop 65 warning appears on the physical bottle and is confirmed in the product listing. The product product page specifies gloves for handling and rinsing with water on skin contact. The sweet taste of brake fluids in this class is a documented attractant for pets and children; store sealed and out of reach. Brake fluid is drain-destined and cannot be disposed of in household drains or storm sewers.
Yes. RBF 700 is a non-silicone synthetic fluid · glycol-ether based · which is the correct chemistry for ABS, electronic stability control, and traction control hydraulic systems. The Motul TDS confirms it is not silicone-based ('Do not mix with silicone DOT 5 silicone base'). DOT 5 silicone brake fluid is incompatible with ABS systems; RBF 700 is not DOT 5.
Boiling points are only one part of the DOT specification. DOT 5.1 also sets a maximum viscosity at -40°C (900 mm²/s). The RBF 700 TDS shows viscosity of 1,580 mm²/s at -40°C · above the DOT 5.1 maximum. Cold viscosity prevents DOT 5.1 certification even though heat performance exceeds the spec. The product earns the DOT 4 label it carries.
Both are full-synthetic Motul DOT 4 racing brake fluids. RBF 700 has a higher documented dry boiling point (637°F vs. 594°F for RBF 600) and a higher wet boiling point (401°F vs. 399°F). The gap on wet boiling point is small; the larger difference is on dry boiling point, where RBF 700 is 43°F higher. For extreme track use with repeated hard braking, RBF 700 provides additional margin.
