TL;DR Petroleum-carrier pre-drain engine flush · the manufacturer states it loosens deposits before an oil change, and avoid ingestion since this is a petroleum-derived solvent concentrate (do not induce vomiting; seek medical attention). DANGER signal word from an aspiration hazard.
Motul Engine Clean AUTO is a petroleum-based pre-drain engine flush, not a stay-in-service oil additive. The fully disclosed C10-C13 isoalkane solvent works by dissolving sludge, varnish, and combustion deposits from sensitive areas including hydraulic lifters and piston rings during a 10·15 minute idle run before the oil is drained. The manufacturer states decreased oil consumption and extended catalytic converter and DPF life · brand claims with no independent corroboration found. Owner impressions are positive from a small base. No ZDDP chemistry; no catalytic converter or phosphorus concerns.
Best for owners of older or higher-mileage engines who want a cleaning pass before an oil change · particularly when switching to a new oil brand or after extended drain intervals. Motul is a well-regarded motorsport-heritage brand and this product follows a standard solvent-flush formula. Skip if you are looking for an anti-wear additive: this is a flush concentrate, not a tribological supplement, and it exits with the old oil. Not needed for new engines maintained on schedule with the OEM-specified oil.
DANGER signal word driven by an aspiration hazard (H304) · do not induce vomiting if ingested; seek medical attention immediately. H304 is an ingestion-pathway hazard, not an inhalation hazard: no respiratory-irritation codes appear in SDS §2. A brief pour in a ventilated garage does not require respiratory protection per the SDS, but avoid use in a fully enclosed space. Wear gloves and goggles during the concentrate pour as standard precaution for a petroleum-solvent product. Drain-destined petroleum concentrate · used oil goes to a collection facility, not the drain.
