From the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
“H319 (eye irritation, Cat 2) is in the SDS §2 mixture classification. Overhead aerosol application in a semi-enclosed under-vehicle posture creates realistic splash and mist contact with the eyes.”

“H315 (skin irritation, Cat 1/2) is in the SDS §2 mixture classification. Petroleum solvent carrier at significant concentration warrants gloves during any application involving direct contact or overspray.”
— U-POL
U.S. regulatory standard
29 CFR 1910.138(a)
“appropriate hand protection when employees' hands are exposed to hazards such as those from… chemicals which produce an adverse effect on the skin or eyes…”

From the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
“H370 (STOT SE Cat 1 — causes damage to organs through single inhalation exposure) and H350 (confirmed carcinogen, Cat 1A) are in the SDS §2 mixture classification. H336 (narcosis, STOT SE Cat 3) is also present. Overhead aerosol application in a semi-enclosed garage with these §2 classifications means the SDS §8 half-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges is not optional — the classification calls for it.”

CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 26, 2026
TL;DR U-POL's petroleum-solvent aerosol undercoating lays down a hard black textured film on bare metal, but it launched in July 2024 and community evidence is too thin to confirm multi-season corrosion protection. The SDS carries a confirmed carcinogen classification and a single-exposure organ-damage classification at the mixture level; SDS §8 specifies a half-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges for overhead aerosol application.
What it is and how it performs
Petroleum-solvent based aerosol undercoating — not rubberized asphalt or bitumen. Ester and aromatic hydrocarbon solvent carriers leave a hard textured black film; manufacturer claims rust prevention and sound deadening. Shake, spray overlapping wet coats; aerosol wand coverage of frame rails is manageable from a creeper. Reviewers confirm the application works, but 79 reviews with no multi-season follow-up and no salt-belt geography means durability cannot be independently verified.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
The right buyer is rustproofing a clean undercarriage and can accept an unproven multi-season track record. Skip it over active rust perforation — undercoating traps moisture over corroding metal; a rust converter is the correct first step. Also skip it in a sealed garage with no airflow: the carcinogen and organ-damage §2 classifications make enclosed aerosol use genuinely hazardous.
Safety and environmental impact
DANGER is health-code-driven at the §2 mixture level: the SDS carries a confirmed carcinogen classification (from crystalline silica — a filler present at 0.1–1% by weight), a single-exposure organ-damage classification, narcosis, and repeat-exposure organ concerns. The carcinogen classification for crystalline silica is based on inhalation of respirable silica particles — a risk primarily associated with grinding or sanding cured material, not with wet aerosol spray application. Prop 65 confirmed on the product label. SDS §8 specifies a half-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges for overhead aerosol application. VOC estimated at ~360 g/L from §3 ingredient concentrations; the product is CARB-registered (MIR CARB ABP 0.95 lbs/gal per back label), which reflects regulatory air-quality compliance accounting — not elimination of solvent emissions. Primary solvents are biodegradable per SDS §12; no aquatic toxicity at §2 mixture level. Product cures on the vehicle and does not rinse to drains.
Frequently asked questions
Is U-POL Protective Undercoating Spray safe to use?▾
The Safety Data Sheet for U-POL Protective Undercoating Spray carries a DANGER signal word, with classified hazards including H222 (extremely flammable aerosol); H229 (pressurized container: may burst if heated); H315 (causes skin irritation). The Amazon listing also carries a California Prop 65 warning. See the PPE breakdown above for use-case-specific guidance translated from the SDS hazard codes.
How does U-POL Protective Undercoating Spray score on CarCareTruth?▾
CarCareTruth scores U-POL Protective Undercoating Spray at 5.3 out of 10 on the composite CCT score, with a health sub-score of 1.0/10. The CCT score blends real-world effectiveness, ingredient health impact pulled from the manufacturer's safety sheet, and environmental footprint against a published category rubric. See the methodology link on this page for the full scoring breakdown.
