About this product's hazards. This product's Safety Data Sheet uses signal word danger. Read the manufacturer's SDS and follow all safety instructions before use. CarCareTruth ratings translate the manufacturer's safety sheet. They do not replace the SDS or substitute for a hazard assessment specific to your task.
Health score is for adult use as intended, per the manufacturer's SDS. It does not model child ingestion, accidental spill cleanup, or off-label use. See the safety panel below for full hazard classification, and /disclaimer for the full editorial scope.
GHS hazard codes are quoted from the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet. PPE tiers below translate those codes and the listed ingredient chemistry; they are not CarCareTruth recommendations.

From the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
“Aerosol delivery creates mist at face height near the battery. No eye irritation H-code in the SDS. Situational tier reflects the aerosol form factor and battery-height application position.”

From the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
“No skin irritation H-code in the formula SDS. Situational tier reflects hand contact with the dissolved corrosion slurry during the wipe step, which contains lead compounds from the battery terminals.”
— NOCO
CarCareTruth publishes the cited sources verbatim and does not advise what action a user should take. Consult the full SDS before use.
From the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
“No H335 (respiratory irritation) in the SDS. Aerosol form factor warrants situational lung protection in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces such as a closed garage. Keep away from ignition sources.”
— NOCO

TL;DR Handles moderate-to-heavy corrosion buildup without a wire brush, and the color-change indicator reliably confirms when the acid-neutralization is complete. A Prop 65 warning and H373 appear in the SDS; both appear to trace to the undisclosed ingredient fraction rather than the named actives.
Spray the foam onto corroded terminal posts and cable clamps, wait for the pink color-change to confirm acid deposits are neutralized, then rinse or wipe clean. A large, well-rated owner base confirms single-application removal of moderate-to-heavy buildup without scrubbing. pH 7 (neutral) means no etching risk to lead posts, copper lugs, or rubber boot seals. Standard aerosol with straw gives workable control; some overspray to the battery housing is expected. Currently listed as not in stock at Amazon.
Good fit for any owner dealing with routine terminal corrosion on a car, truck, or motorcycle battery. The color-change indicator makes it especially useful for first-timers who want visible confirmation the reaction worked. Skip it if full ingredient transparency matters to you: the SDS withholds the indicator dye chemistry and the specific Prop 65 substance.
DANGER on the can is from the flammable propellant, not health chemistry. The formula's hazard classification is WARNING, with H373 and a Prop 65-listed substance appearing in the SDS. Wear goggles when spraying at face height; adequate ventilation in a closed garage and distance from ignition sources are needed. The formula rinses to drain with no aquatic toxicity codes in the SDS. Battery terminal corrosion contains lead sulfate: wash hands after handling the dissolved slurry and avoid rinsing into storm drains.
The Safety Data Sheet for NOCO E404 Battery Terminal Cleaner and Acid Detector carries a DANGER signal word, with classified hazards including H222 (extremely flammable aerosol); H373 (may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure). The Amazon listing also carries a California Prop 65 warning. See the PPE breakdown above for use-case-specific guidance translated from the SDS hazard codes.
CarCareTruth scores NOCO E404 Battery Terminal Cleaner and Acid Detector at 7.5 out of 10 on the composite CCT score, with a health sub-score of 8.0/10. The CCT score blends real-world effectiveness, ingredient health impact pulled from the manufacturer's safety sheet, and environmental footprint against a published category rubric. See the methodology link on this page for the full scoring breakdown.
Per the Safety Data Sheet ingredient disclosure: Per SDS §3 (2015-05-20): Butane (CAS 106-97-8) 6.8%; 2-Propanol (CAS 67-63-0) 5.9%; Propane (CAS 74-98-6) 3.1%; Sodium Bicarbonate (CAS 144-55-8) 3.0%; components with unknown toxicity 3.2% (trade secret). Indicator dye chemistry not disclosed.
