Only when: splash risk
Translated from the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
No H318 or H319 at mixture level. SDS §2 classifies both physical and health hazards as 'Not classified.' Safety glasses with side shields address the physical splash risk during the oil-change pour step, not a chemical eye-hazard classification.

Translated from the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
SDS Section 8 directs chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile recommended) whenever skin exposure is possible, and Section 11 reports a real, non-classified effect from skin contact: frequent or prolonged contact may defat and dry the skin, leading to discomfort and dermatitis. No H315 at the mixture level (Section 2 is 'Not classified'), but the confirmed defatting and dermatitis effect moves this past a routine splash precaution.

Only when: in enclosed space
Beyond SDS: translated from the ingredient chemistry
SDS §2 classifies health hazards as 'Not classified,' with no H330, H331, H334, or H335 at the mixture level, and the product is non-volatile at ambient temperature (SDS §9 vapor pressure under 0.1 kPa at 20°C, flash point 200°C). SDS §8's respirator language is tied to 'if engineering controls do not maintain airborne concentrations to a level which is adequate to protect worker health,' generic exposure-limit boilerplate rather than a scenario-specific control. The situational tier translates that boilerplate and the underlying non-volatile chemistry into a cautious precaution for pouring or draining oil in a closed garage, not a mixture-level inhalation hazard.
CarCareTruth publishes the cited sources verbatim and does not advise what action a user should take. Consult the full SDS before use.
No PPE specified in published sources for ventilation. Absence does not imply “not needed” — consult the full Safety Data Sheet.

Scope of these PPE tiers. The tiers on this page translate the product's Safety Data Sheet where one is published, plus its ingredient chemistry, into a comparable rating. They describe a formulation, not a situation: a tier is not a safety determination for any specific user, task, quantity, or environment. The manufacturer's label and use instructions govern how the product is handled. Where the product is used at work, the employer's PPE program and hazard assessment under 29 CFR 1910.132 decide what protection is selected, not this page.

TL;DR Ford's own factory-fill full synthetic oil for the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel V6, certified to Ford Specification WSS-M2C214-B1 and API Service FA-4, a Ford factory diesel specification most third-party diesel oils on the market are not built to carry. It ships only as a 1-quart bottle, and the 3.0L Power Stroke holds 6.5 quarts with the filter, so a full oil change takes seven bottles. No mileage drain-interval claim is marketed; it follows the truck's own oil-life monitor.
Motorcraft's diesel-only 5W-30, built to Ford's WSS-M2C214-B1 specification and certified to API FA-4, a current low-viscosity diesel category. Ford calls it a full synthetic formulation, "particularly recommended for use in Ford F-150 equipped with a 3.0L diesel engine." FA-4 sounds like a downgrade to anyone used to hearing API CK-4 is the safe diesel default, but Ford engineered this engine around FA-4; here it is the factory-correct category, not a lesser one. As of 2026-08-24, a check of the other major diesel-oil brands sold on Amazon (Mobil Delvac 1 ESP, Valvoline Premium Blue, Chevron Delo, Castrol, Liqui Moly and Ravenol) found none carrying this exact WSS-M2C214-B1 / FA-4 spec. Ford does sanction one alternative, in its own chart rather than on a bottle: above -20 degrees F you may run SAE 5W-40 meeting WSS-M2C171-F1 in API CK-4, and Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 meets that. Check current listings before assuming any of this stays true.
It ships only as a 1-quart bottle, and the 3.0L Power Stroke holds 6.5 quarts with the filter, so a full change takes seven bottles. Ford does not currently sell this spec in a jug; a case of twelve 1-quart bottles is the largest genuine multi-pack found.
Best for 2018-2020 F-150 owners running the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel who want the exact spec their owner's manual calls for, especially anyone keeping warranty documentation. Skip it if your F-150 has a gasoline engine (2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L Ti-VCT V6, 5.0L V8, or 3.5L EcoBoost); Ford's own literature says not to run this in a gasoline engine with a catalyst. It also does not cover any other Power Stroke diesel; Ford specifically excludes the 6.7L, 6.4L, 6.0L, 7.3L, 4.5L, and 3.2L engines.
The Safety Data Sheet classifies both physical and health hazards as "Not classified," with no signal word and no health-tier hazard codes at the mixture level. It does carry a mixture-level aquatic hazard (harmful to aquatic life, long-lasting effects) tied to the zinc-based anti-wear additive. Safety glasses are a reasonable precaution against splash during pouring, and nitrile gloves address the skin dryness that prolonged contact can cause. The Safety Data Sheet states this product contains no chemicals currently listed under California's Proposition 65, and no warning is posted on the Amazon listing either.
Used oil should go to a collection center, not down a drain or on the ground; AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto Parts, and most municipal hazardous-waste facilities take it for recycling. The Safety Data Sheet on file was last revised in 2017, nine years ago; Ford's current specification sheet still cites the same spec and API category, with no sign of a reformulation since.
Seven quarts. The 3.0L Power Stroke diesel in the 2018-2020 F-150 holds 6.5 quarts with the oil filter, per the owner's manual, and this oil is only sold as a single 1-quart bottle. Buy seven bottles, or look for a multi-pack of this same part number (XO-5W30-QFA) to avoid buying loose singles.
Because that is what Ford's own specification calls for. Ford's Product Data Sheet for this exact product lists Ford Specification WSS-M2C214-B1 and API Service FA-4, not CK-4. FA-4 is a lower-viscosity, lower-HTHS diesel oil category built for engines engineered around it, and the 3.0L Power Stroke is one of those engines. FA-4 is often described as incompatible with older CK-4-spec diesels, but that caution runs the other direction here: this is the factory-correct category for this specific engine, not a downgrade from CK-4. That does not make every CK-4 oil wrong for this truck, only that CK-4 is not a general substitute for the FA-4 spec. Ford's own oil-applications chart names one exception by name: above -20 degrees F you may run an SAE 5W-40 meeting Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 in API CK-4.
No to both. The manufacturer's own product page states this oil should not be used in gasoline engines equipped with catalysts, and explicitly excludes the 6.7L, 6.4L, 6.0L, 7.3L, 4.5L, and 3.2L Power Stroke diesel engines. It is formulated for the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel V6 in the F-150 only.
No. The manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet states this product is not known to contain any chemicals currently listed under California's Proposition 65 as carcinogens or reproductive toxins, and Amazon's own listing data shows no Prop 65 warning either.
No. Motorcraft also sells a 5-quart 5W-30 jug (part number XO-5W30-QFS), but that is a gasoline motor oil on a different Ford specification. This product, part number XO-5W30-QFA, is a diesel-only oil sold in a 1-quart bottle. Check the part number before buying to make sure you get the diesel formulation.
Per manufacturer cross-reference, not a physical test fit. A single generation often forks by engine, trim, and market.
Check this against your owner's manual before you buy
⚠ Confirmed only for the 3.0L Power Stroke V6 turbo diesel in the 2018-2020 F-150. This is a diesel oil built to a diesel-only Ford specification; it must not be used in this generation's gasoline engines (2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L Ti-VCT V6, 5.0L V8, 3.5L EcoBoost), and a gasoline oil is not a substitute for a diesel oil in the 3.0L Power Stroke at any viscosity.
