Winter & snow tires

Winter tires use a softer rubber compound and aggressive siping that keep grip when the road drops below about 45 degrees, where an all-season hardens up and slides. The honest badge to look for is the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF), not the older M+S mark, so every tire below carries a 3PMSF rating. We score each one on tread quality, ingredient health, and environmental footprint, then rank by that score.

This list shows tires rated 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake), the real severe-snow badge, regardless of their performance family.

Match these to your car

The right type still has to come in your size. Pick your year, make, and model to confirm your factory (OE) tire size, then match it to a tire above.

Winter & snow tires questions

What does 3PMSF mean on a winter tire?
3PMSF is the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. It means the tire passed a standardized snow-traction test, so it is rated for severe winter conditions. The older M+S (mud and snow) mark is self-applied by the maker and does not require that test, so 3PMSF is the badge that actually tells you a tire is built for winter.
Can I run winter tires all year?
You can, but the soft winter compound wears faster and feels vague in summer heat, so most owners swap to an all-season or summer set once the cold passes. If you want one tire for the whole year and still get a real winter rating, look at all-weather tires, which also carry the 3PMSF mark.
Do winter tires come in my car's size?
Most popular sizes are covered, but not all. Pick your car in the tire picker to confirm your factory (OE) size first, then match it against the winter tires here. Your driver's-door jamb sticker is the final word on the exact size your car left the factory with.
