TL;DR 3PMSF-certified winter tire with class-leading ice braking in Tire Rack instrumented tests. For sedans and compact CUVs in hard-winter climates.
The Blizzak WS90 is a dedicated passenger-car/CUV winter tire in 52 sizes from 14- to 19-inch rims, carrying the 3PMSF severe-snow stamp. Tire Rack instrumented tests show it beating the Michelin X-Ice Snow on ice (0.9 ft at 12 mph) and wet (7.5 ft at 50 mph). TyreReviews gave it first place in two 2020 winter tests; Consumer Reports ranked it 3rd of 10 in 2023. Owner-odometer data puts tread life at 3-4 winter seasons, typical for the soft Multicell compound that enables ice traction.
Right pick for a sedan or compact-CUV owner who faces hard winters and wants instrumented ice and wet braking data behind the purchase. Skip it for year-round use; a 3PMSF all-weather avoids seasonal swaps.
Cured-rubber-and-steel construction; no chemical-exposure pathway in normal mounting and use. Tires shed tire-wear particles and 6PPD-quinone in runoff; scrap tires are predominantly burned rather than recycled. Category-wide burden, not unique to this model.
