Aluminium Powder

  • Abrasives
  • CAS 7429-90-5
  • IUPAC: Aluminum

Aluminium Powder (CAS 7429-90-5) appears in 4 of the 1,812 car-care products CarCareTruth tracks (as of June 2026).

Aluminum powder (CAS 7429-90-5) is SARA 313 reportable. Occupational exposure limits established for respirable and inhalable aluminum dust. In paste format bound in grease carrier, the respirable dust pathway is negligible. Not classified as a carcinogen or asthmagen. ACGIH TLV-TWA 1 mg/m³ respirable.

Aluminium powder (CAS 7429-90-5) is finely divided metallic aluminum used as the primary active anti-seize component in aluminum-based and aluminum/graphite anti-seize compounds. The metal flakes create a sacrificial barrier between mating threaded surfaces that resists galling (particularly on aluminum-on-steel and steel-on-steel joints), galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, and thread seizure after heat cycling.

In paste format, the aluminum flakes are bound in a petroleum-grease carrier. This binding eliminates the explosive/flammability risk associated with dry fine aluminum powder (classified as flammable solid in dry form). At product-use concentrations in the paste, respirable dust exposure during normal application is negligible — the inhalation concerns for dry aluminum metal powder do not translate to paste-format products under normal application conditions.

The aluminum flake content remains on the fastener threads after application, providing corrosion protection throughout the service life of the joint.

They describe the ingredient itself; whether a hazard applies to a finished product depends on its concentration and how it's used.
