Vehicle recall FAQ

How do I check if my car has a recall?
Paste your VIN, or pick your vehicle's year, make, and model above. We query NHTSA, the U.S. vehicle-safety regulator, and show every safety recall on record for that car, what each one means, and what to do. It's free and takes a few seconds.
Can I check car recalls by VIN?
Yes. Paste your 17-character VIN (it's on the lower-left of the windshield and on your registration) and we decode it to your exact year, make, and model, then pull NHTSA's recalls for it. Each recall also shows who it actually affects, so you can tell whether a campaign applies to your specific vehicle. For the definitive unrepaired-recall status of one exact car, we link you straight to NHTSA's official VIN tool.
Why does a recall show up that doesn't seem to apply to my car?
NHTSA files every recall against a whole year/make/model, but many campaigns only affect a slice of those vehicles, such as a specific build-date window or a dealer-installed option. Each recall here shows NHTSA's own 'who's affected' wording so you can self-check. If that description doesn't match your vehicle, the recall most likely isn't yours, which you can confirm with your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Are recall repairs free?
Yes. Federal law requires the manufacturer to fix a safety recall at no charge (parts and labor) at any franchised dealer, even if you bought the car used. You don't have to be the original owner.
Do car recalls expire?
The safety defect never expires, but the manufacturer's obligation to repair it for free generally applies to vehicles up to 15 years old from the date of sale. It's worth getting any open recall fixed as soon as possible regardless.
What does a 'Do Not Drive' or 'Park Outside' recall mean?
These are NHTSA's most urgent flags. 'Do Not Drive' means the defect is dangerous enough that you should stop driving the car until it's repaired. 'Park Outside' means it can catch fire even when parked, so you should keep it away from buildings until the free fix is done.
What's the difference between a recall and a complaint?
A recall is an official safety action: the manufacturer or NHTSA has determined a defect needs a free repair. A complaint is a problem an owner reported to NHTSA; complaints can be an early warning sign before a recall is issued, but they aren't an official defect finding.
Why doesn't my car show any recalls?
Most likely there are no open safety recalls for your year, make, and model, which is good news. Note that a clean result here doesn't cover recalls older than 15 years or ones announced in the last few days, and it isn't VIN-specific. To confirm a specific car's unrepaired status, check its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Do recalls transfer when I buy a used car?
Yes. A recall follows the vehicle, not the owner. If you're buying a used car, check it for open recalls first; the free repair is available to you as the new owner.
Is this recall checker free?
Completely free, with no signup and no email required. We pull the data directly from NHTSA's public database and translate it into plain English.
