TL;DR Handles light swirls on soft-to-medium paint but needs extra passes on harder finishes — confirmed by AutogeekOnline community data. CSA certified; no independent US safety listing (no UL, no ETL).
What it is and how it performs
A corded random-orbital (DA) polisher running 2,500–6,800 OPM with a 6 mm throw and 6" backing plate. The 6 mm throw is a finishing and light-correction machine — community sources confirm swirl removal on soft-to-medium paint but note it needs longer working time than 15 mm machines. At 5.75 lb it is noticeably heavy, limiting extended-session comfort.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Beginner or occasional weekend detailer working soft daily-driver paint with light swirls will find it capable and forgiving; the DA random orbit prevents burn-through. Skip it for heavy single-stage correction or hard clear coats — a higher-throw DA serves that job better.
Safety and environmental impact
CSA certified (North American electrical safety); no UL or ETL listing is on file for US buyers. No CPSC recall active. Corded; standard e-waste disposal applies at end of life.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Porter-Cable 7424XP a DA polisher or a rotary polisher?▾
The 7424XP is a random-orbital (dual-action / DA) polisher, not a rotary. The backing plate orbits around its center axis while also rotating on an offset, producing a random scratch pattern that resists burning through paint. DA polishers are significantly more beginner-forgiving than rotary polishers — an uneven dwell on a rotary can burn through clear coat; the same mistake on a DA self-corrects through the random orbit. The 7424XP's 6 mm orbit throw makes it a finishing and light-correction machine.
What is the throw on the Porter-Cable 7424XP — 6 mm or 8 mm?▾
The throw is 6 mm. An earlier version of this page incorrectly listed 8 mm — that belongs to the Chemical Guys TORQX, not the 7424XP. The 7424XP's 6 mm orbit is confirmed by manufacturer documentation and community consensus on AutogeekOnline. A 6 mm throw is a finishing and light-correction orbit; buyers expecting 15 mm or 21 mm correction aggressiveness should look at a higher-throw DA.
Is the Porter-Cable 7424XP UL listed?▾
No UL Listing or ETL Certification has been verified for the 7424XP in US safety databases (UL Product iQ and Intertek ETL — both searched May 2026). The 7424XP carries a CSA mark (Canadian Standards Association), which is a North American electrical safety standard but is not equivalent to a US UL or ETL independent listing for US buyers.
Is the Porter-Cable brand still active?▾
Porter-Cable is a legacy brand under Stanley Black & Decker. As of 2023, the brand has not posted to social media or launched significant new products (documented by toolguyd.com). The 7424XP remains in production and is actively sold on Amazon (in stock, current Amazon's Choice badge), but the brand is not receiving active product development investment. Buyers prioritizing long-term parts availability should note this context.
Does the Porter-Cable 7424XP come with a hook-and-loop backing plate?▾
The Polisher Only variant (ASIN B002654I46) ships with a proprietary 5-inch counterbalance for use with 6-inch pads — the default pad is fixed-mount, not hook-and-loop. Buyers wanting full hook-and-loop pad compatibility should add an aftermarket backing plate (Lake Country, Meguiar's, or similar 5/16"-24 spindle thread). The spindle accepts standard third-party plates without adapters.

A Review for the Less Than Mechanically Inclined
I am not mechanically inclined nor am I an auto hobbyist or detailer. I'm just a guy who likes to take care of his vehicles and maintain that new car appearance. Until now, I have been waxing our family cars the old fashioned way: with a lot of elbow grease and the sacrifice of valuable time. I tend to research the items in which I invest and my intended purchase of a random-orbital polisher was no different.Meguiar's and Griot's Garage are on-line sites that cater to auto hobbyists and detailers. A cursory check of their web pages reveals that they market the Porter Cable Random-Orbital Polisher as their preferred product. I concluded, therefore, that it must be a quality product, a prudent choice and purchased the polisher from Amazon. Having never used one, I paid close attention to the reviews of those who shared their knowledge and experience through comments here.Based solely on the comments submitted in previous reviews, I purchased the optional 6-Hole, Hook and Loop Standard Pad but didn't really know why it was necessary at the time of purchase. I also visited the Griot's Garage website and, as recommended, purchased the orange foam polishing pad and a wax removal bonnet.Upon receipt of all the items purchased, it became obvious why the aforementioned accessories are preferable. The polishing pad that comes standard with the Porter Cable is fixed to the polisher disk - requiring the entire unit to be removed from the polisher for cleaning. While it is certainly serviceable and can be fitted with a wax removal bonnet, cleaning of the polishing pad is far easier if it can be removed from the disk. You'll want to ensure that the polishing pad used to apply auto polish is cleaned after each use to remove fine particles of dried polish that can scratch a car's finish. For those as unfamiliar with the terminology as I was, "hook and loop" is the generic description of the fastener we commonly refer to by the brand name "Velcro". The optional Hook and Loop Standard pad has a surface with microscopic "hooks" to which a polishing pad that has one surface containing the microscopic "loops" can be affixed and subsequently removed with ease. The wax removal bonnet, like a fitted sheet, is attached over the polishing pad when the user is ready to remove the applied polish.Attachment of the handle is self-evident. The optional 6-Hole, Hook and Loop Standard Pad is attached by securing the slip nut on the polisher using the wrench that comes with the machine and inserting and rotating the threaded male-end of the disk into the female end on the polisher. The orange polishing pad that I obtained from Griot's Garage is then attached to the disk via their respective "Velcro" surfaces. The power switch is located on top of the polisher and the speed control is located at the rear. The machine applies a thin, evenly distributed layer of polish to the surface. I then fitted the polishing bonnet over the polishing pad to remove the dried polish. The job took about one-forth the time of doing so manually and with so much less exertion. The result was a deep, brilliant, showroom finish and an operator that wasn't "pooped out" to get that finish. Subsequently, I removed the bonnet and the applicator pad from the polishing disk and washed them thoroughly with cold water to remove any embedded polish and dried particles. They are both ready to be re-used. I couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase and the results that I achieved.I hope this helps answer most questions.
