PORTER-CABLE is one of the oldest power tool brands in the United States, founded in 1906. The company pioneered several tool categories, including the portable belt sander and helical-drive circular saw. After years of ownership changes, it was acquired by Black & Decker in 2004 and is now part of Stanley Black & Decker.
The brand is best known in the automotive detailing community for its 7424XP random-orbital polisher, which became the entry-level standard for machine polishing through the 2000s and 2010s. Under Stanley Black & Decker, PORTER-CABLE has received minimal new product investment and is widely considered a legacy brand maintained rather than actively developed.
