CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 28, 2026
TL;DR No independent SAE J1858 multi-pass test data — the 80% at 20-micron claim cites no test method; silicone ADBV confirmed from manufacturer disclosure but no independent cut-open has been located.
What it is and how it performs
Spin-on canister with cellulose-synthetic blend media, silicone ADBV, and M22-1.50 metric thread — genuine Ford OEM replacement for 300+ Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury applications from 2009–2026, including all gasoline engines in the F-150 2011–2026. The manufacturer claims 80% efficiency at 20 microns but cites no test standard. Construction is unverified by independent cut-open; 11,480 reviews at 4.8★ show no pattern of failure. Service interval is implied, not explicitly stated.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Right pick for Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury owners doing standard oil changes who want the genuine OEM part — confirmed M22-1.50 fitment and zero community fitment issues across 11,480 reviews. Skip if independent SAE J1858 data is required or if you run an extended-drain program; the cellulose-synthetic blend media is not rated for long-drain use.
Safety and environmental impact
Passive spin-on filter — no SDS, no chemical exposure pathway from the filter itself. Spent filters contain residual motor oil, a hazardous waste in most US jurisdictions; drained filters are accepted at most automotive parts stores. The steel canister is recyclable as ferrous scrap after draining.
Frequently asked questions
What vehicles does the Motorcraft FL-500-S fit?▾
The FL-500-S covers 300+ application lines across Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles from 2009–2026, including the F-150 (2011–2026, all gas engines), Expedition (2015–2026), Explorer (2011–2026), Mustang (2011–2025), Edge (2009–2018), and Lincoln Navigator (2015–2026). It uses an M22-1.50 metric thread, which is different from the FL-820S (3/4-16 thread for the older platform). Always verify fitment against your specific year, make, model, and engine using Ford's application guide before installation.
Is the '80% efficiency at 20 microns' claim on the FL-500-S backed by independent test data?▾
No. The 80% at 20-micron efficiency figure appears in the product description but cites no test method — not SAE J1858, not ISO 16889, not even a manufacturer-internal standard. Without a cited test method, this is marketing copy rather than verifiable evidence. No independent multi-pass filtration test data has been published for the FL-500-S.
Does the Motorcraft FL-500-S have an anti-drain-back valve (ADBV)?▾
Yes. Motorcraft states that the FL-500-S uses a silicone anti-drain-back valve. Silicone is more heat- and cold-resistant than standard nitrile rubber, which matters for cold-start performance. This is confirmed from the manufacturer's product description: 'anti-drain back valves made of silicone provide greater cold/heat resistance.' No independent cut-open review has been located to verify ADBV construction beyond the manufacturer's disclosure.
Is the FL-500-S an add-on item on Amazon?▾
Yes. The FL-500-S single-pack (ASIN B001KR1BQE) carries Amazon add-on item status, meaning it requires a qualifying order minimum or a Subscribe & Save enrollment to purchase on its own. Purchasing alongside motor oil (or the 2-pack or 12-pack variants) is the common workaround.
What is the service interval for the Motorcraft FL-500-S?▾
No specific mileage rating is stated on the FL-500-S product page. Ford's standard OEM service guidance for most listed applications is 5,000–7,500 miles depending on driving conditions, oil type, and vehicle model. The FL-500-S uses cellulose-synthetic blend media, which is not marketed or rated for extended drain intervals (10,000+ miles); follow Ford's guidance for your specific vehicle.
Why does the FL-500-S show a Proposition 65 warning?▾
Amazon displays a Proposition 65 warning for the FL-500-S (confirmed in the product listing). This warning is standard for automotive steel components sold in California and relates to metal content (such as steel, lead-containing coatings, or trace metals in manufacturing), not to any chemical hazard from using the filter in normal service. The filter has no chemical exposure pathway in normal use.

The Only Filter I Trust for My Ford & Lincoln – Perfect OEM Fit
When it comes to my 2017 Ford Taurus and my Lincoln Navigator, I don't take risks with aftermarket oil filters. The Motorcraft FL-500-S is the factory-spec part for a reason, and at this price point, there’s no reason to buy anything else.Fit & Build Quality:The threads are always clean and the gasket comes pre-lubricated enough that it seats perfectly with just hand-tightening. I’ve never had a "dry start" issue with these, which tells me the anti-drainback valve is doing its job correctly. In my Navigator, where the filter location can be a bit of a reach, having the textured grip on the end of the canister makes removal and install much easier.Performance:OEM Reliability: These are designed specifically for the flow rates of the 3.5L/3.7L engines. I’ve cut these open after a 5,000-mile interval, and the pleats are always straight and the bypass valve is still firm.Peace of Mind: Using the Motorcraft part keeps everything within warranty specs and gives you the confidence that the filtration media is actually catching the microscopic grit that wears down your engine.Pros:Direct OEM Replacement: No guessing on fitment for Ford/Lincoln platforms.Silicon Anti-Drainback Valve: Superior to the rubber ones found in cheap generic filters.Great Value: Usually cheaper here on Amazon than at the local big-box auto stores.Cons:Shipping Protection: Occasionally, the thin cardboard box gets crushed in the shipping bag. Always check the mounting plate for any dents before you install it.Final Verdict:If you’re doing your own oil changes on a Ford or Lincoln, just stick with the FL-500-S. It’s a high-quality, high-reliability part that has never let me down across multiple vehicles.
