TL;DR A genuinely clean-label waterless wash with a real carnauba wax topper — the SDS classifies it as not hazardous, performance is competent on lightly dusty paint, and the price is in line with other mass-market RTU products.
What it is and how it performs
Spray onto a panel, wipe clean with a microfiber, repeat panel-by-panel — a typical full-vehicle wash uses 6–8 oz of product. The carnauba wax in the formula leaves a thin hydrophobic layer that beads water for 2–4 weeks per community reports. Lubricity is adequate for lightly dusty paint and the spray pattern is consistent. Cleaning capability is genuinely bounded — Mothers does not market this as a substitute for a real soap-and-bucket wash, and community evidence confirms it performs as advertised on light contamination but struggles with heavier road film. The 24 oz size is the standard format; per-wash cost is moderate.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Casual car owners wanting a simple maintenance wash with a real wax bonus, and shoppers who prefer the clean-label safety profile of the Mothers SDS — this is the rational mass-market option. Skip it if you wash regularly enough to justify a concentrate (Optimum No Rinse offers significantly better per-wash economy) or if your vehicle is genuinely dirty (visible road film or mud); that's a soap-and-hose wash.
Safety and environmental impact
The SDS (rev. May 2015) classifies the product as not hazardous under OSHA HCS 2012 — no signal word, no GHS pictograms, no hazard codes. SDS Section 3 reports no ingredients at concentrations considered hazardous to health. No Prop 65 warning, no PFAS. CARB compliance is consistent with the category. The waterless format eliminates 60–100 gallons of hose water per wash relative to a traditional rinse. Wipes off into wastewater via the laundered microfiber.
Frequently asked questions
How does Mothers Waterless Wash & Wax compare to a regular soap-and-water wash?▾
It is designed for between-wash maintenance, not as a substitute for a full soap-and-bucket wash. Use it on lightly soiled paint (dust, fingerprints, light pollen) — for visible road film, mud, or salt buildup, a hose-and-soap wash is the correct tool. Used as labelled, it cleans light contamination and adds a short-term carnauba wax layer for hydrophobic protection.
Will the carnauba wax in Mothers Waterless build up over time?▾
No — the wax layer applied per spray is very thin and any prior layer is largely lifted off and renewed during each wipe. Community reports describe consistent results across regular use without buildup or hazing. The wax provides 2–4 weeks of mild hydrophobic enhancement per typical use.
Is Mothers California Gold Waterless safe on dark paint?▾
It is safe on lightly dusty dark paint per community reports, but the lubricity is technique-sensitive — apply enough product to keep the panel wet during wipe, use a clean microfiber per panel, and avoid using on heavier contamination. Dark paint is more revealing of any marring, so the bounded use case (lightly soiled only) is especially important.
Can I use this product on glass and chrome?▾
Mothers states the product is safe on glass, plastic trim, chrome, and clear coat. The wax topper on glass may slightly affect water beading behavior but does not impair visibility under normal use; for streak-free glass results, a dedicated glass cleaner is preferable as a follow-up.

Wonderful product!!!!
This product is amazing. I had been holding off using it, as I wasn't sure if it would cause white haze on black/gray plastic trim. Fast forward several months. It had been a while since I washed my car, and the weather was nice, so I grabbed a handful of microfiber towels and my bottle of Mothers Waterless Wash and Wax and went outside. The instructions said to spray on all exterior surfaces, so I threw caution to the wind and went for it. 40 minutes and 1/2 a bottle later, my midsize crossover vehicle was all clean! I did not use it on glass even though it is supposedly OK to do so as I was afraid it would cause smearing with the wipers. I also did not use it on the headlights or tail lights. Everything else, however, cleaned up perfectly fine! It is essential to use multiple microfiber towels. Switch to a new one as soon as the one you are using is completely dirty. I wiped the product on the body panel with one microfiber towel and then dried/buffed it off with a super plush microfiber detailing towel. I also applied liberal amounts of the Waterless Wash and Wax to ensure as much dirt as possible was getting lifted and suspended in the solution to avoid wiping across dry panels. This product is wonderful and I hope Mothers continues to offer it. I would not hesitate to recommend it to other people and will definitely be buying it again when my current bottle runs out. Use it correctly, and it is a reliable alternative to using a hose and water for a standard car wash routine. DO NOT use it to wash a vehicle with dried, caked on mud, road salt, or other heavy dried-on debris. You will need a hose and water for that. The Waterless Wash and Wax It is best used on a dusty or moderately dirty car. If you have a ton of bugs on the front end, remove those first with a bug and tar remover product before using this product. The bottle says it will wash 4 cars, however that is a little optimistic for anything other than a compact sedan. Expect 2 washes for a full-size car or mid-sized SUV. Remember to also purchase microfiber towels with this product if you don't already have a supply on hand!
