CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 28, 2026
TL;DR Petroleum-oil-base glaze that fills and masks light swirls and haze — not a correction product. Amazon verified-purchase reviewers (4.7 stars across 388 reviews) consistently describe visible improvement on dark paint with warm, oily depth before wax. The fill holds roughly 3–5 washes before swirls reappear, consistent with the category norm. California Prop 65 warning applies per the Amazon listing.
What it is and how it performs
The Mothers California Gold Micro-Polishing Glaze is Step 2 of the three-step California Gold Ultimate Wax System. It fills light swirls, fine scratches, and paint haze by depositing a petroleum-oil-and-kaolin-filler matrix over the defects — the imperfections become temporarily less visible, not removed. The petroleum-oil carrier delivers the warm, oily depth that show-prep detailers choose this formula class for. Apply a thin layer to clean, clayed paint with a foam applicator pad; let it haze 5–10 minutes as the carrier flashes; buff off with a clean microfiber before applying carnauba wax on top. The product buffs off cleanly in the Amazon review corpus with no significant residue complaints. The fill is temporary — swirls begin reappearing after roughly 3–5 wash cycles, so expect reapplication at each full detail.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Best fit for the show-prep detailer or daily-driver owner using the full Mothers California Gold three-step system who wants maximum depth under carnauba wax. Skip it if your paint has heavy swirls or scratches — a glaze masks, not corrects, and a polisher plus compound is what those need. Also skip it before a ceramic coating: the petroleum-oil carrier can interfere with coating adhesion, and most coating prep instructions prohibit oil-based products.
Safety and environmental impact
The SDS (Mothers Polishes Waxes Cleaners, Huntington Beach, CA; revised May 2015) classifies the mixture as NOT CLASSIFIED under OSHA HazCom 2012 — no signal word, no GHS hazard codes at product level. The heavy alkylate naphtha fraction at 10–25% is why SDS §4 notes drowsiness and dizziness as possible overexposure symptoms; no H335 or H336 classification is assigned at product level. The product carries a California Prop 65 warning per the Amazon listing; the specific triggering substance is not named in the SDS. Flash point exceeds 105°C — not flammable in normal use. Glaze is a leave-on product applied in low volume with no §2 aquatic hazard classification. Apply in an open garage or outdoors.
Frequently asked questions
What is Step 2 in the Mothers California Gold Ultimate Wax System?▾
Step 2 is the Micro-Polishing Glaze — applied after the Step 1 Pre-Wax Cleaner and before the Step 3 carnauba wax. It fills light swirls and haze with optical fillers to improve clarity and depth before the protective wax layer goes on.
Does this glaze remove swirl marks?▾
No — glazes fill and mask swirls optically rather than removing them. The petroleum-oil-and-filler formula makes light swirls and haze less visible, but the marks are still in the paint. When the glaze washes away over several washes, the swirls reappear. Paint correction with a compound or polish is required to actually remove swirl marks.
Can this glaze be used before a ceramic coating?▾
The petroleum-oil-base carrier in this product may interfere with ceramic coating adhesion. Most ceramic coating brands recommend against applying a glaze or any oil-based product before coating. Check your specific coating's prep instructions.
Is this product safe for clearcoats?▾
The manufacturer states it is safe for clearcoated and traditional single-stage paint finishes. The formula does not contain strong abrasives — the kaolin clay component is a mild filler, not a cutting agent.
Does the Mothers California Gold Micro-Polishing Glaze have a Prop 65 warning?▾
Yes — the Amazon product listing carries a California Prop 65 warning. The SDS (revised 2015) does not identify a specific triggering substance; the specific Prop 65 chemical is not disclosed by the manufacturer.

I have a 15 year old BMW 325i that I love have have cared for over the years
Wow was I impressed with the 2 step polish! I think it made all the difference to use both steps as the 2nd step is a micro step that took care of quite a few surface scratches. I have a 15 year old BMW 325i that I love have have cared for over the years. In the past I swore by the P21S Polish and wax but I wasn't happy with the amount of wax I went through last year so I thought I would try something new. Since my car is a 2002 I try to polish the paint every couple of years as needed but I had to work to get the oxidation marks out and the scratches that should have buffed out never did but this product took care of my paint issues once and for all. The trick is doing the 2nd step, one step before wax didn't do it but once I did the 2nd step the paint was smooth to the touch and slick. I had some circular scratches I don't know how I got on my bumper, looked like my son might have done it with his bike, they came right out! The wheel wells flare out in the front and attract scratches and marks all the time, they are gone. I hand polish and wax and take my time. It wasn't fun doing it 3 times but wow was it worth it! I have a ton of wax to do out SUV great value. Also the polish took out the tar that I normally can't wash off and struggle to get rid of. Very easy process. I am a convert! Love this product line!
