TL;DR Surface-coating restorer for faded black plastic and rubber trim: wipes on, dries fast, satin finish. Community owners confirm 2-4 weeks durability on daily drivers. Documented to run onto adjacent paint before curing; tape painted edges near panel boundaries. H317 (skin sensitizer) in SDS §2: wear nitrile gloves. Prop 65 warning on the 12oz variant.
Meguiar's Ultimate Black is a surface-coating restorer: white mineral oil and organo-modified silicone fill the surface texture of faded plastic, vinyl, and rubber trim to produce a dark satin finish. It does not bond with the substrate or penetrate oxidized plastic. Shake well, wipe on with a foam applicator or microfiber cloth, and buff off excess before the product dries. Community owners on daily drivers consistently report 2-4 weeks before fading resumes. The brand's "Lasts and Lasts" label language is not corroborated at month-scale by independent community data. Product can run from trim onto adjacent painted panels if exposed to rain before fully curing; tape painted panel edges at the trim boundary to prevent staining.
Drivers who want a quick, forgiving monthly surface coat on moderately faded exterior trim will find this widely available and easy to apply correctly on the first try. Skip it if trim is severely oxidized or chalky (penetrating-polymer restorers address the underlying substrate rather than just coating the surface), if the car lives outdoors in a rainy climate year-round (re-application frequency becomes burdensome), or if the trim runs directly adjacent to painted panels and rain is expected before overnight curing.
SDS WARNING signal word; H317 (Skin Sensitizer Cat 1A) and H361 (suspected reproductive toxin Cat 2) in SDS §2; SDS §8 specifies nitrile gloves as skin protection. CMIT/MIT at trace levels (UK REACH SDS §3, <0.015%) is classified as a respiratory sensitizer; SDS §8.2 lists respiratory protection where ventilation is inadequate, relevant to individuals with chemical sensitivity to isothiazolinone preservatives. Prop 65 warning appears on the 12oz variant (B0055PD1H4); the 16oz (B0FL4W7NL5) does not carry the warning in current Amazon data. VOC approximately 28 g/L; leave-on pathway; no aquatic toxicity data in SDS §12.
Community owners on daily drivers report 2-4 weeks of darkened trim before noticeable fading. This is typical for surface-coating restorers: the mineral oil and silicone formula coats the trim surface but does not chemically bond with the plastic, so washing and rain gradually remove it. The manufacturer does not give a specific week or month claim on the current 16oz label. Re-application every 3-4 weeks keeps trim looking consistently dark.
It can, especially if it rains before the product has fully cured on the trim surface. Multiple forum owners have documented the product running from trim onto adjacent painted panels during rain events, and it can be difficult to remove once dried on paint. Applying carefully, avoiding over-application near painted surfaces, and allowing the treated trim to cure overnight before the car is exposed to rain reduces this risk significantly.
It is a surface coating. The SDS identifies white mineral oil and organo-modified silicone as the primary active ingredients: these coat and darken trim by filling the surface texture rather than bonding chemically with the plastic substrate. This produces good results quickly and is forgiving to apply, but the durability (2-4 weeks) is shorter than penetrating polymer or acrylic resin restorers.
The SDS classifies this product as a Skin Sensitizer Cat 1A (H317), meaning repeated skin contact can trigger an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals. The SDS also notes a suspected reproductive toxin ingredient (H361) at low concentration. The SDS §8 specifies nitrile gloves as the skin protection measure. Outdoor or well-ventilated application is preferred; the SDS §8.2 notes respiratory protection where ventilation is inadequate, relevant to individuals sensitive to the CMIT/MIT preservative present at trace levels.
The product is marketed for plastic, vinyl, and rubber exterior trim. Community owners confirm it darkens rubber (door seals, window trim, EPDM moldings) effectively, with results similar to plastic: good immediate darkening that fades gradually over weeks. EPDM rubber tends to hold surface coatings slightly longer than smooth ABS plastic because the more porous surface texture retains the mineral oil film.
