TL;DR Converts moderate surface rust to a stable black layer; community follow-up going back to 2018 shows no re-rust. Paintable with oil-based enamel and bed liner. Prep is minimal: wire brush loose scale and apply. WARNING signal word from the acidic formula; wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses. Prop 65 warning confirmed, specific substance not disclosed.
Gempler's Rust Converter chemically converts iron oxide to a stable black surface barrier ready to paint. Wire brush loose scale off, brush or roll two coats; each dries in 20-30 minutes. No sandblasting required for surface rust that hasn't lost metal thickness. Owner community data going back to 2018 shows no re-rust, including damp indoor environments and outdoor vehicle and farm equipment. Coverage runs 80-125 sq ft per quart depending on rust severity. The formula drips on steep verticals: load the brush lightly and work in sections. It acts as its own primer; oil-based enamel and bed liner topcoats adhere without an additional primer coat. Epoxy and urethane clearcoat compatibility is not documented in community testing.
Right for treating surface rust on undercarriage panels, frame seams, truck beds, tanks, or outdoor steel before repainting. No specialized equipment needed. Skip it for structural rust where metal has already been lost: this stabilizes surface iron oxide, it does not restore metal thickness. Perforated metal needs cut-and-weld repair first.
WARNING signal word; H317 skin sensitizer confirmed in the comparable formula chemistry. Wear nitrile gloves during application. Safety glasses are warranted for overhead or undercarriage work where drip exposure is realistic. No respiratory protection required outdoors; general ventilation in enclosed spaces. Prop 65 warning confirmed; specific substance not disclosed. The converted layer cures on the metal and is not rinsed to a drain.
Long-term owner follow-up going back to 2018 shows no re-rust on treated surfaces, including in damp indoor environments and high-humidity outdoor applications. The tannic acid chemistry converts iron oxide to a stable black ferric tannate layer rather than simply coating it. Durability depends on prep quality: wire brushing loose scale before application is required. Surfaces left unpainted may eventually re-oxidize if exposed to direct weathering and moisture over many years.
Oil-based enamel and bed liner have both been applied over the converted surface by experienced long-term users with documented success. Rattle-can spray paint is also consistent with the before/after marketing imagery. The manufacturer states a 48-hour cure time before topcoat. No epoxy primer or urethane clearcoat compatibility is documented in community testing. The product acts as its own primer layer, so no additional primer is required for most topcoats.
The label rates coverage at 125 sq ft per quart on smooth surfaces. Owner experience on moderately rusted metal fencing shows approximately 80 sq ft per quart. Heavy or pitted rust absorbs more product and reduces effective coverage per quart. On light-to-moderate surface rust with wire brush prep, 100-125 sq ft is achievable. For heavily corroded surfaces, plan for closer to 60-80 sq ft.
No. The preparation requirement is wire brushing to remove loose scale and flaking rust, then cleaning off dust and debris. No sandblasting or media blasting is required. The product is designed for use on surface rust that has not compromised the metal's structural integrity. For deep pitting where metal has been lost, structural metal repair is needed before any rust converter can help.
A California Proposition 65 warning is confirmed on the product listing and Gemplers product page. The specific substance is not publicly disclosed by Gemplers. The warning may originate from a component of the polymer binder or a trace solvent in the formula; tannic acid itself is not a Prop 65 listed substance. The Prop 65 disclosure does not indicate the level of exposure during normal brush application.
