Graphite

  • Abrasives
  • CAS 7782-42-5
  • IUPAC: Carbon (graphite form)

Graphite (CAS 7782-42-5) appears in 5 of the 1,812 car-care products CarCareTruth tracks (as of June 2026).

Graphite dust has established OEL (ACGIH TLV-TWA 2 mg/m³ respirable). Not classified as a carcinogen, sensitizer, or asthmagen. In paste format, respirable dust exposure is negligible. LC50 >2000 mg/m³ rat inhalation.

Graphite (CAS 7782-42-5) is the crystalline, layered form of carbon used as a dry lubricating additive in anti-seize compounds, high-temperature brake lubricants, and penetrating lubricants. The layered crystal structure of graphite allows plate-like particles to slide over one another, providing lubrication between metal surfaces even after the petroleum carrier has cooked off during heat cycling.

In anti-seize compounds, graphite works in combination with metal flakes (copper, aluminum, nickel) to maintain a lubricating film on threaded fastener surfaces throughout the temperature range of normal vehicle operation. The graphite remains on the threads after the carrier oil volatilizes, helping ensure clean disassembly after extended service.

The primary occupational health concern for graphite is respirable dust exposure in manufacturing or dry-handling contexts. In paste format, bound in a petroleum-grease carrier, the respirable dust exposure pathway during normal application is negligible.

They describe the ingredient itself; whether a hazard applies to a finished product depends on its concentration and how it's used.
