CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 26, 2026
TL;DR A pliers-style oil filter wrench — not a cap, not a strap — covering filters from 2-1/4 in. to 4-1/2 in. in diameter via a three-position slip joint. Alloy steel construction, right-angle serrated teeth for bidirectional grip, 11.5-inch handles for reach. Amazon verified-purchase reviewers (4.6 stars across 7,234 reviews) report successful removal on accessible and moderately deep filter locations, including the Toyota Sequoia 4.7L (deep behind a skid plate) and a Ducati M900 motorcycle (recessed filter with limited grip surface). Covered by TEKTON's no-time-limit lifetime warranty. Currently unavailable on Amazon.
What it is and how it performs
A pliers-style oil filter wrench with a three-position adjustable slip joint and alloy steel jaws. The curved jaw design wraps around the filter housing and bites in either rotational direction via right-angle serrations — different from a strap (which relies on friction across a wide contact band) and from a cap (which requires an exact size match on the filter end flutes). At 11.5 inches, the handles provide more reach into engine bays than a band-style wrench, which matters on filters mounted deep or at an angle. The diameter range (2-1/4–4-1/2 in.) covers common passenger car, light truck, and motorcycle spin-on filters. Alloy steel is confirmed from the Amazon spec; the specific alloy grade is not disclosed. Amazon verified-purchase reviewers (4.6 stars across 7,234 reviews) include confirmed successful use on a deep-mounted Toyota Sequoia 4.7L filter and a recessed Ducati M900 motorcycle filter with no slippage despite oil-coated surfaces.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Right pick for a home mechanic who needs a universal filter wrench for multiple vehicles or filter sizes, where a dedicated cap-style wrench would require buying one per filter application. The long handles add reach for filters seated deep in the engine bay where a band wrench cannot operate effectively. Skip if your filter is consistently over-torqued by a quick-lube shop — the pliers-jaw geometry can slip on a badly glazed or severely stuck filter housing, and a deep-cup cap-style or chain wrench holds better under extreme torque. Also skip if you need a ratchet-compatible solution: the 5866 is a direct-handle pliers tool, not a 3/8-in. drive cap.
Safety and environmental impact
Alloy steel hand tool with foam ergonomic handles — no chemical exposure pathway, no SDS. The wrench itself carries no health hazard in normal use. Alloy steel recycles through standard ferrous scrap channels at end of life; TEKTON's no-receipt lifetime warranty provides an individual-replacement path that avoids premature disposal. The motor oil released during filter removal is a separate product with its own hazard profile — nitrile gloves and eye protection for hot-oil contact are general oil-change practice, not wrench-specific requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Is the TEKTON 5866 currently available on Amazon?▾
No — the listing showed 'Currently unavailable' on Amazon as of May 2026. Availability may return; check the listing directly.
What filter diameters does the TEKTON 5866 fit?▾
The 5866 fits oil filters from 2-1/4 in. to 4-1/2 in. in diameter (approximately 57 mm to 114 mm). This range covers most standard passenger car, light truck, and motorcycle spin-on filters. The three-position slip joint adjusts to the filter size without swapping parts.
Is this a cap-style or a strap-style oil filter wrench?▾
Neither. The 5866 is a pliers-style wrench — adjustable slip-joint pliers with curved jaws and right-angle serrated teeth designed to grip the oil filter housing. It reaches where band-style (strap) wrenches cannot and does not require a ratchet like a cap-style wrench.
What is the drive interface on the TEKTON 5866?▾
There is no square drive. The 5866 is a direct-handle pliers wrench — you grip the two handles and turn by hand. No ratchet or extension is required or compatible.
Does TEKTON warrant the 5866?▾
TEKTON's no-time-limit, no-receipt lifetime warranty applies. Replacement is handled directly by TEKTON at tekton.com/warranty.
Will the 5866 work on a stuck or over-torqued oil filter?▾
The 11.5-inch handles provide substantial leverage, and the right-angle teeth engage in either rotation direction. Amazon verified-purchase reviewers (4.6 stars across 7,234 reviews) report reliable removal on accessible filters. Badly glazed or severely over-torqued filters may cause the jaws to slip on the filter housing — a strap wrench with a wider contact surface or a filter-removal socket may grip better in those cases.

Works Well on Motorcycles
Bought this to work on a Ducati M900. The recessed design of the oil filter on the motorcycle required an alternative to the traditional oil filter wrench, and I'm pleased to report that this tool fit the bill perfectly. The pliers are relatively low profile, so they can get good grip on minimal real-estate on the filter, which was a big perk fro me since I didn't have much to work with. The length of the handles wasn't a factor for me, but if I do ever need them for a car, there is a good length that I could reach with them comfortably. In terms of grip strength, they performed well and were able to bite the grooves on several different filter brands I've used with the bike and spin them loose. They didn't have any grip problems despite ending up getting some oil coating in the process.
