TL;DR Sealed AGM Group 51R, 450 SAE CCA, 66-minute RC. Community evidence is mixed: some report 2 to 3 year failures, others 6 to 13. Reverse-polarity terminal is a confirmed fit for Honda compact cars, including the current Civic.
Group 51R sealed AGM, SpiralCell construction confirmed on the manufacturer spec sheet. SAE CCA is 450 on the Amazon listing (spec sheet: 460, a minor variance). RC is 66 minutes, MCA 575 amps. Warranty is 36 months full replacement, 12 commercial. Service life is mixed: 2 to 3 years on some units, 6 to 13 on others. This AGM exceeds the flooded battery Honda specifies for Group 51R.
Right pick for a Group 51R replacement, including the current Honda Civic, where vibration tolerance and accessory load headroom matter more than warranty length. Skip if a longer warranty and a more consistent service record are the priority.
Sealed AGM, no chemical exposure pathway from the battery itself in normal installation. Spent lead-acid batteries are recovered through the retail core-charge return system, about 99 percent recycled at certified smelters.
The D51R is a BCI Group 51R battery with a reverse-polarity SAE top-post terminal. Confirmed applications in the CCT vehicle-fitment index include the current-generation Honda Civic, plus older Civic generations, Honda Element, HR-V, Insight, Clarity, CR-V, Acura Integra and RSX, Nissan GT-R and Versa, and the Toyota MR2 Spyder. Always confirm your specific year and trim against the manufacturer's fitment guide before purchase.
450 CCA is the figure Optima publishes as the primary cranking spec in the Amazon listing title and feature bullets, and it is a genuine SAE-style cold-cranking rating, not a Power Cranking Amps or other marketing substitute. The manufacturer's own technical spec sheet lists a slightly different figure, 460 amps at BCI 0F, which is a minor cross-source variance rather than a substituted figure.
Both are the same Group 51 case and SpiralCell AGM construction. The D51 (part 8071-167) has standard-polarity top posts; the D51R (part 8073-167, this product) has reverse-polarity posts. The R suffix is the detail that matters for fitment: a vehicle that specifies reverse polarity needs the D51R, not the D51.
Community reports are mixed rather than uniformly strong. Some owners report failures in the 2 to 3 year range, while others report 6 to 13 years of service. Treat this as an average AGM lifespan for planning purposes rather than assuming the longer end of that range.
SpiralCell is Optima's spiral-wound cell construction, where the lead-tin alloy plates and absorbed glass mat are wound into a tight cylinder rather than stacked flat as in conventional flooded and most AGM batteries. Optima and third-party retailers cite this construction as roughly 15 times more vibration-resistant than a standard flooded battery.
