TL;DR Two soft mid-grade clay bars plus the Quik Detailer lubricant and a microfiber towel — a complete first-time-clayer starter kit that handles typical daily-driver contamination across 6,000+ Amazon reviews at 4.7 stars.
What it is and how it performs
A 2-bar synthetic polybutene clay kit at 80 g per bar, packaged with 16 oz of Meguiar's Quik Detailer (the clay lubricant), a Supreme Shine Microfiber towel, and a storage case. The Smooth Surface clay is mid-grade and soft — kneadable at room temperature, forgiving for first-time users. Spray Quik Detailer liberally, glide flat-handed, knead to expose a clean face, follow with the included towel. Community evidence broadly confirms effective decontamination on daily-driver contamination including brake dust, mild fallout, water spots, and overspray.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Best for first-time clayers who want a complete starter kit at a competitive price. The bundled towel and storage case add real value for someone building out their detailing kit. Skip for heavily contaminated vehicles where a heavier-grade bar (Bilt Hamber Medium, Chemical Guys Heavy Duty) handles the contamination level better, and for buyers who already have a clay-lube spray and don't need the bundled accessories.
Durability and care
Two 80 g bars and a storage case typically cover several full-vehicle decontaminations before kneading no longer exposes a clean face. Store bars in the included case — drying out and grit pickup are the failure modes. Discard immediately if dropped on the ground; embedded grit will scratch paint on the next pass. Spent bars go to landfill regardless of brand.
Frequently asked questions
What is included in the Meguiar's G1016 Smooth Surface Clay Kit?▾
Two 80-gram premium clay bars, a 16 oz spray bottle of Quik Detailer (Mist & Wipe) which serves as the clay lubricant, one Supreme Shine Microfiber towel, and a storage case for the bars. The kit covers everything a first-time clayer needs except the wash supplies.
Is Meguiar's Smooth Surface Clay safe on clear coat paint?▾
Yes — Meguiar's specifies the clay as safe on any paint finish including clear coats, and community evidence broadly confirms this with proper technique (adequate lubrication, kneading the bar to expose a clean face, and not dragging a saturated bar). Some community reports of light marring on dark paint without proper technique are typical for any mid-grade clay.
How long does the Meguiar's clay bar last?▾
Each 80-gram bar typically handles 1–3 vehicles depending on contamination level — community reports range from a single heavy decontamination session per bar to multiple light claying sessions. The kit's two bars and storage case typically cover several full-vehicle decontaminations before replacement.
What is the difference between Meguiar's Smooth Surface Clay and the Quik Clay Starter Kit?▾
The G1016 Smooth Surface Clay Kit is the consumer line — two 80g premium clay bars, Quik Detailer, microfiber towel, and case. Meguiar's also makes Quik Clay Starter Kits at smaller bar weights (sometimes a single 50g bar) targeted at lower price points. The G1016 is the standard mainstream version.

The best car product I've used in....well...ever. Results on my truck were amazing.
Wow....I wish I would have know about this stuff years ago. I used this on my 2011 dark blue Tundra the past weekend and the results were amazing. I wish I would have taken close up before and after photos. Just to be clear, I take good care of me cars and trucks. They're washed weekly, waxed 2-3 times per year, and in the garage when not at work. So I thought the paint wasn't that bad....I was so wrong.I hand washed the truck as usual, and it wasn't even that dirty, more dust that anything. I dried it off with the synthetic chamois and micro fiber towel. Then I broke out the clay bar and lube/spray wax. I took half of one bar and formed it into a disk about the size of a large posit not, maybe a little smaller. I sprayed the lube/wax on the panel and rubbed the clay bar as instructed with slight pressure, but not actually pushing down on it. For the first 2-3 passes I could actually hear the bar as it went over the particles embedded in the paint and then it would become smooth and quite. I turned the clay over and it was brown and full of crap it had pulled of my paint. I wiped the panel down with a micro fiber cloth and the paint literally looked new. I ran my hand across it and it was smoother than I had ever felt it. Overjoyed at the results I continued on with the rest of the truck. It looks amazing. I seriously wouldn't have believed the results if I wouldn't have done it myself. By the time I was on the last panel I could tell the clay was stating to break down, but I was impressed with how long it lasted. They should send 2 bottles of the lube/wax spray, because I think the spray will run out before the clay.I'm sold on this stuff, it was really easy to use and fast, I think start to finish on the clay bar cleaning was maybe 20-30 minutes. I will be doing this at least once a year, if not twice. Well worth the money.
