CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 27, 2026
TL;DR Washable oiled cotton gauze drop-in for EJ-platform Subarus (WRX 2008–2014, WRX STI 2012–2018, Forester, Outback, Legacy, and more) with a claimed 75,000-mile cleaning interval and indefinite reusability. Filtration efficiency is manufacturer-stated only — no independent ISO 5011 corroboration found for this SKU. Community fitment across multiple Subaru models is solid; 2015–2021 WRX owners should confirm fitment against K&N's application guide before purchasing.
What it is and how it performs
The 33-2304 is a 4-layer oiled cotton gauze panel filter designed as a direct drop-in for the Subaru EJ-platform air box. K&N claims up to 99% filtration efficiency using ISO 5011 methodology — that figure is from K&N's own published data, and no independent third-party lab has verified it for this specific SKU, so the filtration score reflects that evidence gap. Airflow improvement is not independently documented by dyno testing for this filter; community reviewers on WRX, STI, Outback, and Legacy platforms describe improved throttle feel, but no measured hp gains have been independently confirmed. The manufacturer's claim of increased horsepower and acceleration is not independently corroborated for the 33-2304. The filter ships pre-oiled and installs in under five minutes with no tools. OEM cross-reference numbers (16546AA090, 16546AA10A, 16546AA120, 16546AA12A) are confirmed in Amazon listing specifications, and multiple community reviewers report proper sealing with no bypass gaps across WRX, STI, Outback, XV Crosstrek, Legacy, and Forester applications.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Right pick for an EJ-platform Subaru owner (2008–2014 WRX, 2012–2018 WRX STI, Forester, Legacy, Outback, Impreza) who wants to eliminate recurring filter replacement costs over a long ownership horizon and is comfortable with periodic cleaning maintenance using K&N's Recharger kit. Skip if your Subaru is a 2015–2021 WRX — the 2015+ WRX uses the FA20DIT engine with a different air box, and fitment for that application is unconfirmed; check K&N's application guide or RockAuto for your specific year before purchasing. Also skip if your vehicle's MAF sensor is sensitive to filter oil: community WRX and STI long-term owners report that over-oiling during re-service is the documented trigger — apply minimal oil and allow 20–30 minutes for penetration before reinstalling.
Safety and environmental impact
Passive replacement component — no chemical exposure pathway during installation or removal; no SDS applies to the filter. The environment score of 6.9 reflects the washable reusable lifecycle: this filter eliminates 4–8 disposable filter replacement cycles over a typical 100,000-mile vehicle ownership period, with a recyclable metal frame and cotton gauze media; no K&N take-back program is currently documented. Filter cleaning and re-oiling with K&N's Recharger kit involves solvent and petroleum-based oil — review that product's safety data separately for PPE guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Does the K&N 33-2304 fit a 2015–2021 WRX?▾
2015–2021 WRX owners: the 2015+ WRX uses the FA20DIT engine with a different air box. Fitment for this application is unconfirmed — check K&N's application guide or RockAuto for your specific year before purchasing. The 2015–2018 WRX STI retained the EJ257 engine and is confirmed compatible.
How often does the K&N 33-2304 need to be cleaned?▾
K&N states a 75,000-mile cleaning interval under normal highway driving (approximately every 5 years at 15,000 miles/year). Amazon reviewers with WRX, STI, and Outback applications generally confirm this interval is realistic for light-duty highway use. Dusty or unpaved-road driving shortens the interval — one long-term reviewer reports replacing the filter at 50,000 miles on gravel roads.
Can a K&N oiled filter damage the MAF sensor on a WRX or STI?▾
This is a community-debated topic. Long-term WRX and STI owners who have used the 33-2304 without MAF issues consistently credit applying minimal oil and waiting 20–30 minutes for penetration before reinstallation. The consensus in the available community evidence is that over-oiling during re-service is the documented trigger, not the factory-oiled filter at initial installation.
What OEM part does the K&N 33-2304 replace?▾
The 33-2304 replaces OEM Subaru part numbers 16546AA090, 16546AA10A, 16546AA120, and 16546AA12A. These cross-references are confirmed in the Amazon listing specifications from the Rainforest data as of May 2026.

This filter really rocks!!
I bought the K&N air filter for my 2016 Subaru Outback with 2.5i engine and installed it on 7-21-2016. It fits perfectly- as mentioned by others the only way it fits in this car's air box is to turn the filter 90 degrees so the filter slats are running vertically, not horizontally as it does on the OEM filter. The filter looks square but is not a perfect square. Build quality is much better and more solid than the flimsy OEM or aftermarket paper air filters. The deep side of the filter (air input) faces the front of the car which I installed into the front portion of the air box. I noticed right away that throttle response was better and much more immediate, and the engine sounds and runs more smoothly. After 2 weeks of having it installed acceleration and power have really improved. The lackluster acceleration was a drawback I've had with this car in exchange for good fuel economy, but I love everything else about it. After having had the K&N filter installed for 2 weeks acceleration has really improved to where I am very impressed and am having even more fun driving it. This is my fifth Subaru with the 2.5i engine. I was thinking my next Subaru would be with the 6 cylinder but no longer, thanks to this air filter. Apparently the engine computer system needs time to adjust to the increased air flow. This is not imagined on my part, power and speed have considerably improved, as well as smoother acceleration. Feels like power has increased by several horsepower. The car also idles at a lower RPM. I have not yet determined any increase in fuel economy- I've been having too much fun driving this car faster and harder than before. This filter really does great things for my car's performance! Don't hesitate to try it.
