SoonVolvo S60
1st Generation (P2)
2001–2009 · P2 · sedan
First-generation S60 on Volvo's P2 platform. 2.4L / 2.5L turbocharged inline-five. S60 R (2004-2007) is the cult collector pick — 300 hp turbo I5, AWD, four-corner active suspension (Four-C). Final 'classic Volvo' generation before P3 brought a sleeker silhouette.
Watch out: Aisin 5-speed automatic solenoid wear past 100k. PCV breather system clogs (oil leaks if neglected). Power-steering pump common wear item. ETM (electronic throttle module) had a known failure mode on early-2000s P2 cars — Volvo extended warranty addressed many but verify on used purchase.

2nd Generation (P3)
2011–2018 · P3 · sedan
Second-generation S60 on the P3 platform. 2.5L T5 inline-five / 3.0L T6 inline-six in the US, with AWD optional on T6. Polestar variant (2014-2018) was a 350 hp+ sedan in limited numbers. Major mid-cycle refresh for 2014 model year. Replaced by SPA-platform S60 for 2019.
Watch out: Turbocharger oil-supply line wear on T6 inline-six. PCV breather system service. Some cars affected by Aisin TF-80SC transmission solenoid issues. Generally durable; the inline-six is robust but heavy on the nose.

SoonVolvo S60
3rd Generation (SPA)
2019–2026 · SPA · sedan
Third-generation S60 — first Volvo built in the United States, at the Charleston, South Carolina plant. SPA platform. 2.0L inline-four across the lineup. T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid (415 combined hp) is the Polestar Engineered top trim. AWD optional. Discontinued in some non-US markets in 2023; US production continues but on a wind-down schedule.
Watch out: Twincharged engine complexity (super + turbo). T8 plug-in high-voltage system and 12V auxiliary battery are out-of-warranty cost watch-outs. SPA infotainment software dated on early (2019-2022) cars; post-refresh Google software is much better.

1st Generation (P3)
2011–2018 · P3 · wagon
First-generation V60 on the Volvo P3 platform. 2.5L inline-five (T5) / 3.0L inline-six (T6 R-Design AWD) in the US — both turbocharged. V60 Polestar (2014-2018) was a 350 hp+ wagon with serious motorsport credentials, sold in limited numbers in the US. Replaced 2018 by the second-gen V60 on SPA.
Watch out: Inline-five and inline-six engines are durable. Watch for PCV valve and turbocharger oil-line concerns at 100k+ miles. Some early cars affected by Aisin TF-80SC transmission solenoid wear (same trans family as XC90 P28). Otherwise unremarkable maintenance.
Modern Era
SoonVolvo V60
2nd Generation (SPA)
2019–2026 · SPA · wagon
Second-generation V60 on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). 2.0L inline-four base — T5 / T6 (twincharged) / Recharge plug-in hybrid. AWD optional. V60 Cross Country (2020+) adds raised ride height and standard AWD. V60 Polestar Engineered (T8 plug-in, 415 combined hp) is the performance variant.
Watch out: Twincharged (super + turbo) inline-four B5 / B6 engines are complex; verify any belt and coolant-system service history. Recharge plug-in: battery and high-voltage cooling system are long-term cost watch-outs. SPA-platform infotainment (Sensus, then Google built-in) has been criticized for slowness in early SPA cars.

SoonVolvo V70
2nd Generation (P26)
2001–2007 · P26 · wagon
Second-generation V70 on the Volvo P2 platform — internally P26. 2.4L / 2.5L turbocharged inline-five at various power levels. V70 R (2003-2007) is the performance icon: 300 hp turbo I5, AWD, four-corner active suspension. The Cross Country variant added raised ride height and standard AWD. Final classic 'boxy Volvo' wagon before P3 reshaping.
Watch out: Aisin AW55-50/51 5-speed automatic on most cars — solenoid wear common past 100k miles. PCV valve breather system clogs and creates oil-pressure issues. Power-steering pump and rack are wear items. Otherwise legendary durability — many of these run past 300k miles.
Y2K Era
SoonVolvo V70
3rd Generation (P3)
2008–2016 · P3 · wagon
Third-generation V70 on the Volvo P3 platform. Larger, sleeker, less boxy than P2. 3.2L I6 / 3.0L T6 turbocharged I6 / 2.5L T5 turbo I5. Sold in US through 2010 model year, then discontinued in NA while continuing globally through 2016. XC70 (Cross Country variant) continued in the US through 2016.
Watch out: Inline-six engines are durable but service-intensive when something goes wrong (timing service, water pump, oil-cooler seals). Air suspension on top trims wears with age. P3 chassis is generally robust; rust on rear quarters and around tailgate seam on cars in salt-belt states.

1st Generation (P3)
2010–2017 · P3 · suv
First-generation XC60 on the Volvo P3 platform. 2.5L / 3.0L T6 turbocharged inline-five and inline-six engines. AWD optional. R-Design trim added sport tuning. Volvo's best-selling vehicle from launch through replacement — the XC60 carried the brand through a difficult financial decade.
Watch out: Aisin transmission solenoid wear past 100k miles (consistent pattern across mid-2000s/2010s Volvo). Turbocharger oil-supply line concerns on T6 inline-six. PCV valve / breather system service. Suspension bushings wear like any 10+ year old SUV.
Modern Era
SoonVolvo XC60
2nd Generation (SPA)
2018–2026 · SPA · suv
Second-generation XC60 on the SPA platform. Shares architecture and design language with XC90 and S90. 2.0L inline-four base (B5/B6 mild hybrid) and Recharge plug-in hybrid (T8). Major mid-cycle refresh for 2024 model year updated infotainment to Google-built-in. Polestar Engineered T8 (415 combined hp) is the performance variant.
Watch out: Twincharged B5/B6 four-cylinder engines are complex. Recharge plug-in: high-voltage battery cooling, charge port, and 12V auxiliary battery are long-term cost watch-outs. SPA infotainment software updates frequent; early cars (2018-2020) feel slow vs. post-refresh Google software.

Y2K Era
SoonVolvo XC90
1st Generation (P28)
2003–2014 · P28 · suv
First-generation XC90 on the Volvo P2 platform (internally P28). 2.5L / 3.2L / 4.4L V8 engines depending on year and market. The 4.4L Yamaha-supplied V8 (2005-2010) is a unicorn. Three-row seating standard. Sold from 2003 through 2014 in the US with minor updates — long lifecycle. The car that established the Volvo SUV brand.
Watch out: Aisin TF-80SC transmission solenoid wear past 100k miles is the famous issue — fluid changes (despite Volvo's 'lifetime' marketing) and solenoid service are the standard preventive. V8 (Yamaha B8444S) head-gasket and timing-chain concerns at high mileage. Otherwise reliable for a 20+ year old SUV.
Modern Era
SoonVolvo XC90
2nd Generation (SPA)
2016–2026 · SPA · suv
Second-generation XC90 — the first vehicle on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). 2.0L inline-four across the lineup, twincharged for higher trims. T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid (400+ combined hp) is the performance flagship. Tasteful, minimalist Scandinavian interior. Three-row seating. Major 2020 mid-cycle refresh; another for 2023 model year.
Watch out: Twincharged engine complexity (super + turbo on the 2.0L). T8 high-voltage battery degradation and the electric-rear-axle motor are long-term cost watch-outs. Sensus infotainment (pre-2023) is slow vs. post-refresh Google-built-in software. Air suspension and adaptive dampers add expense out of warranty.
