Modern Era
1st Generation
2023–2026 · VF8 · suv
VinFast's mid-size crossover SUV and the brand's first major US product, with deliveries to American customers beginning early 2023 (after a 2022 launch announcement). Dual-motor AWD across the lineup: Eco trim makes 348 hp, Plus trim makes 402 hp. Samsung SDI batteries ranging 82 to 87.7 kWh. Early US cars were offered with an unusual battery-subscription business model that VinFast later wound down in favor of conventional battery ownership. Built in Hai Phong, Vietnam.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: Early-build US 2023 cars had widespread documented complaints around build quality (panel gaps, paint defects), software bugs, EPA range falling far short of the marketing claim, and a months-long delay between original delivery promises and actual shipments. VinFast service network in the US is small. Treat as an early-adopter purchase, not a mainstream EV.
2024–2026 · VF9 · suv
VinFast's full-size three-row crossover SUV, sibling to the VF8 on a larger platform. Dual-motor AWD making 402 hp with a 92 or 123 kWh battery pack. Six- or seven-seat layouts; second-row captain's chairs optional. Over 5.1 meters long. Built in Hai Phong, Vietnam. US deliveries began 2024. Marketed against the Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S on price.
Watch out: Inherits the VF8's growing-pains pattern: documented build-quality complaints, range falling short of marketing claims, and a small US service network. The VF9 is even newer than the VF8 in the US market, so the long-term defect record is still forming. Verify any active campaigns and confirm warranty service availability in your area before purchase.
