Modern Era
1st Generation
2022–2026 · R1S · suv
Three-row electric SUV sibling to the R1T, on the same Rivian skateboard platform. US lineup mirrors the R1T: Dual-Motor (533 hp), Performance Dual-Motor (665 hp), and Quad-Motor (835 hp with full torque vectoring). Battery options from 105 kWh Standard to 149 kWh Max. EPA range up to about 410 miles depending on configuration. Seven-passenger three-row layout standard. Built in Normal, Illinois. Gen 2 mid-2024 refresh aligned with the R1T's electronics simplification.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: Shares the Gen 1 R1T problem list: door handle motor failures, screen flickers, and the inverter/charging system recall (NHTSA campaign 24V-191 covering 2022-2024 R1S). Gen 2 cars addressed many of the same. Air suspension service is expensive outside warranty. Tire wear on the standard 22-inch wheels comes up faster than buyers expect.
2022–2026 · R1T · truck
The first US production electric truck, with the first one delivered to a customer on September 28, 2021 (as a 2022 model). Crew-cab four-door body with a 4.5-foot cargo bed and the signature Gear Tunnel pass-through. US lineup: Dual-Motor (533 hp), Performance Dual-Motor (665 hp), and Quad-Motor (835 hp with individual wheel motors and full torque vectoring). Battery options from 105 kWh Standard to 149 kWh Max; EPA range 255 to 420 miles. Built in Normal, Illinois. A 2024 R1T Gen 2 update revised electronics and removed several control modules to cut complexity.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: Multiple Gen 1 issues documented: door handle motor failures, screen flickers, and the ICCU-equivalent charging system recall (Rivian NHTSA campaign 24V-191 covering 2022-2024 R1T and R1S, with an inverter that could fail and leave the vehicle stranded). The Gen 2 mid-2024 refresh addressed many of these via new electronics. Confirm the Gen 1 inverter remedy on any used purchase.
2026–2026 · suv
Rivian's mid-size electric SUV — smaller than the R1S, lower starting price, new dedicated platform. Production began April 2026 at Rivian's Normal, Illinois facility. Launch trim is the Performance (Spring 2026 deliveries); Premium follows in late 2026, Standard Long Range in 2027, and base Standard in late 2027.
Watch out: Too new for owner-side failure-mode data — first deliveries are just rolling out. Watch the R1S history as a proxy for early-production quirks (HVAC software, drive-unit calibration, infotainment). Rivian's service network is improving but still mostly metro-centered; verify proximity before purchase if you're outside major markets.
