Modern Era
1st Generation
2020–2026 · hatchback
Polestar 2 launched 2020 as the brand's first vehicle after its separation from Volvo's performance sub-brand. Built on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform shared with the Volvo XC40 Recharge. Liftback body style. RWD single-motor / AWD dual-motor variants. Multiple battery capacities across years. 2024 model year brought a major facelift, switching from front-mounted to rear-mounted single motor on the base RWD variant and improving range substantially.
Watch out: Early Polestar 2 (2020-2022) cars had a stop-sale recall for a high-voltage rear-motor inverter concern (software fix). 12V auxiliary battery early failure is widespread across CMA EVs. Infotainment is Google-built-in from launch — software experience is the strongest in its segment but updates are frequent.
2024–2026 · Polestar3 · suv
Polestar's first SUV, on Volvo's SPA2 platform shared with the upcoming EX90. Production began February 2024. US lineup: dual-motor AWD only, 483 hp standard, 510 hp with the Performance Pack. 111 kWh battery; EPA range up to about 350 miles. NACS-equipped from launch via adapter, then native NACS port on US-built cars. Built at Volvo's Ridgeville, South Carolina plant for the US market starting late 2024.
Watch out: Brand-new platform on a low-volume manufacturer; the long-term defect record is still forming. Early 2024 cars had a few minor software-related complaints. Polestar dealer network is small compared to Volvo's, and parts and service for the SPA2 platform are concentrated at Volvo dealerships pulling double duty.
