SoonMazda CX-5
KE
2013–2017 · KE · suv
First-generation CX-5. Mazda's first vehicle on the Skyactiv chassis and the model that defined the brand's crossover strategy for a decade. Engines: 2.0L Skyactiv-G I4 (155hp, early/base) and 2.5L Skyactiv-G I4 (~184hp). 6-speed manual (rare, early-year base) or 6-speed Skyactiv automatic. FWD or i-Activ AWD. Five-passenger compact crossover. Best-selling Mazda in the US during its run.
Watch out: Skyactiv-G fuel dilution in oil, same family-wide pattern; check oil level for unexpected *rise*, not just fall. Also: KE-era cars in salt-belt states have aggressive rear-wheel-well rust complaints, physically inspect the inner liner and rocker panels before buying used. Otherwise the KE has been one of the better-aging compact crossovers of its decade.

KF
2018–2026 · KF · suv
Second-generation CX-5. Skyactiv chassis (revised). Engines: 2.5L Skyactiv-G I4 (~187hp) as the volume engine, and from 2019 onward the 2.5L Skyactiv-G Turbo I4 (227-250hp depending on octane) on higher trims. 6-speed Skyactiv automatic only, manual was not continued. FWD or i-Activ AWD. Significantly upgraded interior materials, sound deadening, and chassis refinement over the KE. Mazda's best-selling US vehicle by a wide margin, which is why the Mazda6 was discontinued.
Watch out: Skyactiv-G fuel-dilution-in-oil family pattern continues. On 2.5T turbo cars, the cooling system and intercooler hardware matters more than on N/A cars. The i-Activ AWD transfer case has some reports of premature wear if fluid isn't changed on schedule, many dealers don't include it in routine service intervals, so owners should ask explicitly.

SoonMazda CX-9
TB
2007–2015 · TB · suv
First-generation CX-9. Mazda's three-row family crossover. Built on the Ford CD3 platform shared with the Ford Edge / Lincoln MKX. Engines: Ford Duratec 3.5L V6 (2007), Ford Duratec 3.7L V6 (2008-2015, 273hp). 6-speed automatic. FWD or AWD. Three rows, seven passengers. Mid-cycle facelifts in 2010 and 2013. The pre-Skyactiv-everything era of Mazda, closer to a rebadged Ford than the Skyactiv-era Mazdas that followed.
Watch out: Two well-known patterns. (1) The water pump on the Ford 3.5/3.7 V6 is internal to the timing-cover, failure leaks coolant into the engine and the repair is labor-intensive ($1,500+). Replace proactively at 90-100k miles regardless of whether it's failing. (2) Transfer case on AWD models. TOD (Transfer-on-Demand) unit has documented wear; flush the fluid at 60k intervals.

TC
2016–2024 · TC · suv
Second-generation CX-9. Skyactiv chassis, debuted at the 2015 LA Auto Show. 2.5L Skyactiv-G Turbo I4 only (227hp on 87 octane / 250hp on 93 octane, 310 lb-ft torque). 6-speed Skyactiv automatic. FWD or i-Activ AWD. Three rows, seven passengers. The first Mazda to use the 2.5T Skyactiv-G Turbo engine in volume, which later spread to the CX-5/Mazda6/Mazda3. Discontinued after the 2024 model year, replaced in the Mazda lineup by the new CX-90.
Watch out: Skyactiv-G fuel-dilution-in-oil pattern, plus cooling-system condition matters more on the turbo than on N/A Skyactiv engines. Heavy three-row weight on the front axle wears front lower control arm bushings earlier than on lighter Mazdas. Otherwise no major scandals.

BL
2010–2013 · BL · hatchback
Second-generation Mazda3, sedan and hatchback. Engines: 2.0L MZR I4 (148hp) and 2.5L MZR I4 (167hp); for the 2012 model year, Mazda introduced the new 2.0L Skyactiv-G engine and 6-speed Skyactiv transmissions on select trims. 6-speed manual or 5/6-speed automatic. FWD. Built on the Ford C1 platform shared with the Focus/Volvo S40, the last Mazda3 before Mazda's own Skyactiv chassis. Mazdaspeed3 variant was sold alongside as a separate model.
Watch out: Early 2012-2013 Skyactiv-G cars have documented oil-dilution issues (fuel mixing into engine oil). Mazda issued service campaigns. On MZR cars, the more common watchout is the rear suspension lower-control-arm bushings and the front sway-bar end links, both routine wear items. Rust on the rear wheel arches is increasingly common in salt-belt states.

BM
2014–2018 · BM · hatchback
Third-generation Mazda3, sedan and hatchback. Built on Mazda's own Skyactiv chassis, no more shared Ford platform. Engines: 2.0L Skyactiv-G I4 (155hp) and 2.5L Skyactiv-G I4 (184hp). 6-speed Skyactiv manual or 6-speed Skyactiv automatic. FWD. Mid-cycle facelift (BN) for 2017. The first Mazda3 with the Kodo design language and the heads-up display becoming common on volume cars. Mazdaspeed3 was not continued.
Watch out: Skyactiv-G engines across the BM generation can suffer from fuel dilution in oil, short trips and cold-weather use exacerbate it. Watch oil level on the dipstick (it can rise, not just fall, when fuel-contaminated). Mazda has issued various service updates over the years. Otherwise the BM is one of the more reliable compacts of its era.
Modern Era
SoonMazda Mazda3
BP
2019–2026 · BP · hatchback
Fourth-generation Mazda3, debuted November 2018 at LA Auto Show. Sedan and hatchback. Engines: 2.0L Skyactiv-G (155hp), 2.5L Skyactiv-G (186hp), 2.5L Skyactiv-G Turbo (227-250hp depending on octane), and overseas a 2.0L Skyactiv-X spark-controlled compression-ignition engine (not sold in US in volume). 6-speed manual (early; later dropped from US lineup) or 6-speed Skyactiv automatic. FWD or i-Activ AWD (first Mazda3 with AWD). Dramatically more premium interior than the BM, with materials and design that punch above the segment.
Watch out: Skyactiv-G fuel-in-oil dilution remains a watch-item, though less severe than on the BM. The turbo 2.5T is the same family that's powered the CX-5/CX-9, no major scandals but the cooling-system condition matters more than on the naturally-aspirated variants. Otherwise no chronic mechanical issues as of 2026.

NA (1st Generation)
1989–1997 · NA · convertible
The Miata that revived the affordable lightweight roadster. Pop-up headlights, double-wishbones at all four corners, rear-wheel drive, a five-speed manual (with a four-speed automatic also offered), and around 2,200 pounds. Early 1990-1993 cars used the B6 1.6L (around 116 hp); 1994-1997 received the BP 1.8L (around 128-133 hp). M Edition and R Package trims arrived later in the run.
Watch out: Owner reports of torn rear plastic window on original soft tops (common and a known issue, replacement tops with glass windows are widely available), brittle dashboards cracking in sun-heavy states, soft-top frame seal failures, and oil seepage from the cam-angle sensor and rear main on high-mileage cars. Bolt-on hardtops are common on used cars.

NB (2nd Generation)
1998–2005 · NB · convertible
The NB replaced the NA's pop-up headlights with fixed lamps but kept the same lightweight RWD formula. Engines stayed BP-series 1.8L flat-fours, with variable valve timing (VVT) added for 2001 bringing output to around 142 hp. A glass rear window with defroster became standard mid-cycle. The Mazdaspeed Miata (2004-2005) added a turbocharged 1.8L making around 178 hp. Note: BP designation simplifies; sub-codes vary by year and market.
Watch out: Owner reports of soft-top headliner peeling on later cars, oil consumption on the VVT 1.8L if the variable-valve-timing system is neglected, and clear-coat peel on the hood and decklid (a common NB cosmetic failure). Mazdaspeed Miata turbo cars often have aging factory turbos that need rebuilds.

NC (3rd Generation)
2006–2015 · NC · convertible
Third-gen Miata (NC, 2006-2015) is the biggest and heaviest Miata — partly because it shares a platform with the Mazda RX-8. 2.0L MZR I4 (170hp 2006-2008, 167hp 2009+ after a redesign for higher rev limit) with either a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, or 6-speed automatic. The 2006-2008 NC1 cars are the underrated bargain: 7,000-rpm fuel cut, lighter than the NC2/NC3, and currently the cheapest Miata you can buy. The NC introduced the Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) — the only folding-hardtop Miata Mazda ever made.
Watch out: Rear differential and PPF (power plant frame) bushing wear — clunk on throttle on/off past 100k. Reseal of the diff carrier and replacement of the PPF bushings is a Saturday-afternoon job; ignoring it lets the diff move enough to crack the casing.

ND (4th Generation)
2016–2025 · ND · convertible
Fourth-gen Miata (ND) put the car on a diet — back under 2,400 lb and sharper than the NC in every measurable way. 2.0L SkyActiv-G I4 (155hp 2016-2018 ND1, 181hp 2019+ ND2 after a head/intake/exhaust update that raised the redline to 7,500 rpm). 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto. The ND RF (Retractable Fastback, 2017+) replaces the NC's full hardtop with a targa-style power top. Mazda also sold a Fiat-badged version (Fiat 124 Spider, 2017-2020) with a turbo 1.4L.
Watch out: ND2 (2019+) stretchy connecting-rod bolts — Mazda's revised rod-bolt spec on the high-revving 181hp 2.0L can stretch under sustained track use, leading to rod-bearing failure. Tracked ND2 owners increasingly swap to ARP bolts preventively (~$200 part, engine-out job).

SoonMazda RX-7
SA22C / FB (1st Generation, US)
1979–1985 · SA22C/FB · coupe
The first-gen RX-7 launched in 1978 (as a 1979 US model) with the naturally aspirated 12A twin-rotor Wankel making around 100 hp at first, growing to about 115 hp by the end. The body code SA22C applies to the earlier cars and FB to the post-1981 facelift; both are commonly grouped as first-gen. A larger naturally aspirated 13B was offered late in the run (GSL-SE). Lightweight, RWD, balanced; the car that made the rotary a household name in the US.
Watch out: Owner reports of apex seal wear on neglected or hot-running rotaries, carburetor (early cars) or fuel-injection (late GSL-SE) tuning issues, and rust on rocker panels and rear quarter panels. Premix or quality oil-metering function is essential to keep apex seals alive.
Radwood Era

FC (2nd Generation, 13B-T turbo era)
1986–1991 · FC · coupe
The FC RX-7 moved upscale with a Porsche-944-inspired shape and a Dynamic Tracking Suspension System (DTSS) rear axle. The naturally aspirated 13B made around 146 hp; the 13B-T Turbo II (Turbo trim, 1987 onward) added a turbocharger and bumped output to around 200 hp. A convertible joined for 1988. The FC sits between the analog SA/FB and the wild FD.
Watch out: Owner reports of 13B-T apex seal failure on neglected or boost-pressure-modified engines, charcoal canister and emissions plumbing rot, and aging factory turbo seals. Rotary engine rebuild cost is the make-or-break expense on a used FC. Like all RX-7s, rust on rocker and lower-quarter panels is common on salt-belt cars.

SoonMazda RX-7
FD
1992–2002 · FD3S · coupe
Third-generation RX-7, internally FD3S (JDM) / JM1FD (NA). 1.3L 13B-REW two-rotor Wankel with the first-ever production sequential twin-turbocharger system exported from Japan . 255hp initially, escalating to 280hp by end-of-production (Japan). 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic; manual is the only one anyone cares about. RWD, 50/50 weight distribution, double-wishbone suspension. Sold in the US only for model years 1993-1995 (Base, Touring, R-package); production continued in Japan through August 2002. Earned a permanent spot in the JDM-icon canon.
Watch out: The sequential-turbo system is notorious for fragility, pre-control solenoids ('rats nest' of vacuum lines), brittle wastegate actuators, and the turbos themselves are getting old. Apex seal life on the 13B-REW is shorter than the lighter-loaded Renesis, and rebuilds are now $8-12k done correctly. Plus: factory wiring is brittle, the cooling system is marginal, and most FDs you'll find are heavily modified, buy a documented original example or commit to a full restoration.
