MD (5th Generation)
2011–2016 · MD · sedan
The fifth-gen Elantra that put Hyundai on the map. Nu 1.8L MPI four (148 hp) at launch, later joined by the 2.0L Nu for the 2014 facelift. Won the 2012 North American Car of the Year award. Designed under the Fluidic Sculpture language that defined Hyundai's early-2010s aesthetic. Built in Montgomery, Alabama for US-market sedans.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: The Nu 1.8L and 2.0L engines on later years share the Theta-family piston ring concerns; oil consumption complaints are well-documented on forums for high-mileage cars.

AD (6th Generation)
2017–2020 · AD · sedan
Sixth-gen Elantra walked the styling back to something more conservative after the MD generation's love-it-or-hate-it look. Base car used the 2.0L Nu (147 hp); the 2017-2020 Elantra Sport added a 1.6L Gamma turbo (201 hp) with available 6-speed manual. A mid-cycle 2019 facelift restyled the front and rear. Eco trim used a 1.4L turbo with a 7-speed DCT.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: The 2.0L Nu Atkinson-cycle base engine is part of the Theta-family service campaigns. Check VIN against NHTSA campaigns 20V-018 (knock sensor detection software) and related rod-bearing recalls before buying.

CN7 (7th Generation)
2021–2026 · CN7 · sedan
Seventh-gen Elantra moves to the Hyundai-Kia K3 platform with sharply creased Parametric Dynamics styling. Base trims use the 2.0L Smartstream MPI (147 hp) with an IVT (CVT). A 1.6L hybrid arrived 2021 with 139 hp combined. The N Line trim brings the 1.6L turbo. The full Elantra N (separate hub) is the halo. Facelifted for 2024 with new front fascia and tail.
Watch out: The IVT (intelligent variable transmission, a CVT) is durable on paper but feels rubber-bandy under hard acceleration. Test-drive uphill before buying if that drivability matters to you.

OS (1st Generation)
2018–2022 · OS · suv
First-gen Kona slotted below the Tucson in Hyundai's US SUV lineup with armored-fender, two-tier headlight styling. US lineup: 2.0L Nu MPI (147 hp) and the 1.6L Gamma turbo (175 hp) with a 7-speed DCT. AWD optional. The Kona N performance trim with the 2.0L Theta II turbo (276 hp) launched 2022 in the US (later than other markets). Kona Electric covered separately.
Watch out: The 1.6T DCT had documented low-speed hesitation and clutch judder complaints; Hyundai addressed some via software updates. The 2.0L Theta II turbo in the Kona N inherits the Theta family rod-bearing concerns. Pre-purchase, check VIN against active Hyundai campaigns.

SX2 (2nd Generation)
2024–2026 · SX2 · suv
Second-gen Kona grew about 6 inches in length and adopted the full-width LED light bar that became Hyundai's mid-2020s signature. US lineup: 2.0L Smartstream MPI (147 hp) and a 1.6L turbo (190 hp) with an 8-speed automatic. AWD optional. The Kona N performance variant did not carry forward into the SX2 generation; the Kona Electric continues.
Watch out: First-year (2024) US-spec cars had documented infotainment and software glitches that have been addressed with OTA and dealer updates. The diesel option from prior international generations was dropped, so US buyers only see gas and EV.

Santa Fe 3 gens

SoonHyundai Santa Fe
DM (3rd Generation)
2013–2018 · DM · suv
Third-gen Santa Fe split the US lineup into two distinct vehicles: the shorter-wheelbase DM was sold as Santa Fe Sport (two rows), while the long-wheelbase NC was the standard Santa Fe (three rows). DM Sport ran the 2.4L Theta II GDI (190 hp) and the 2.0L Theta II turbo (264 hp). Both wheelbases used the Fluidic Sculpture design language. The three-row Santa Fe was replaced by the Palisade for 2020, and the platform was unified for the TM fourth-gen.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: Theta II 2.0T and 2.4L applications are squarely in Hyundai's catastrophic rod-bearing recall pattern. Multiple NHTSA campaigns apply. Engine fire risk on early-build cars led to an additional recall. VIN-check is mandatory.
Modern Era
SoonHyundai Santa Fe
TM (4th Generation)
2019–2023 · TM · suv
Fourth-gen Santa Fe simplified the US lineup: the new Palisade absorbed the three-row job, and the Santa Fe became two-row-only. Base trims used the 2.4L Theta II GDI (185 hp); the upper trims ran the 2.0L Theta II turbo (235 hp). A 2021 facelift added the 1.6L turbo hybrid and 1.6L turbo PHEV, replacing the 2.0T on some trims and dropping the 2.4L. Built in Montgomery, Alabama.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: Early-build TM cars (2019-2020) still used the 2.4L and 2.0T Theta II family and are part of the same recall pattern as prior generations. Hybrid and PHEV trims from 2021+ use the newer Smartstream engines and have a cleaner record.

MX5 (5th Generation)
2024–2026 · MX5 · suv
Fifth-gen Santa Fe pivots hard to a boxy, upright SUV silhouette with a long greenhouse and H-shaped LED light signatures. Three-row seating returned to the Santa Fe (Palisade still anchors the larger three-row segment). US lineup: 2.5L turbo (277 hp) and 1.6L turbo hybrid (231 hp combined). XRT trim adds off-road-styled exterior bits and a wider track. The diesel option from prior generations is gone.
Watch out: Brand-new generation, so the long-term defect picture has not formed. The boxier roofline restricts rear visibility, and the XRT trim package is mostly appearance, not real off-road hardware. Test-fit a child seat before assuming the third row is usable.
Sonata 3 gens
Modern Era
SoonHyundai Sonata
YF (6th Generation)
2011–2014 · YF · sedan
The sixth-gen Sonata that legitimately moved Hyundai out of the rental-fleet conversation. Fluidic Sculpture sheetmetal made the previous NF look a decade older overnight. US lineup ran the 2.4L Theta II GDI (198 hp) standard, with the 2.0L Theta II turbo (274 hp) on SE and Limited 2.0T trims. Hybrid joined the lineup with the Hyundai-developed Blue Drive system. Built at HMMA in Montgomery, Alabama.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: The 2.4L and 2.0T Theta II GDI engines are at the center of Hyundai's catastrophic rod-bearing failure recalls (NHTSA campaigns 15V-568, 17V-226, plus the 2020 knock sensor detection software campaign). Check VIN against NHTSA before any purchase.
Modern Era
SoonHyundai Sonata
LF (7th Generation)
2015–2019 · LF · sedan
Seventh-gen Sonata pulled the styling back toward mainstream after the YF's coupe-like roof. US lineup carried the 2.4L Theta II GDI (185 hp), the 2.0L Theta II turbo (245 hp), a 1.6L Gamma turbo (178 hp) on Eco, and the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. A 2018 facelift restyled the front and refreshed the interior. Built in Montgomery, Alabama.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: Same Theta II engine recall pattern as the YF generation. NHTSA campaigns covering rod-bearing failure and the engine compartment fire risk apply to many 2015-2019 Sonatas. VIN-check before purchase, no exceptions.
Modern Era
SoonHyundai Sonata
DN8 (8th Generation)
2020–2026 · DN8 · sedan
Eighth-gen Sonata bet on dramatic fastback proportions and signature LED running lights that flow into the hood. US lineup includes the 2.5L Smartstream GDI (191 hp), the 1.6L turbo (180 hp), the 2.0L hybrid, and the N Line 2.5L turbo (290 hp) introduced for 2021. A 2024 facelift restyled the front. Built in Montgomery, Alabama.
Watch out: Smartstream is the post-Theta family of engines and has so far avoided the catastrophic recall pattern, but the 2024 facelift restyle is divisive, and resale on the pre-facelift 2020-2023 cars is taking the hit. Buy used, not new.
Tucson 2 gens
Modern Era
SoonHyundai Tucson
TL (3rd Generation)
2016–2021 · TL · suv
Third-gen Tucson became Hyundai's best-selling SUV of the 2010s on the strength of value and warranty. US lineup ran the 2.0L Nu MPI (164 hp) and the 1.6L Gamma turbo (175 hp) paired to a 7-speed DCT. A 2019 facelift dropped the DCT and turbo, replacing the lineup with the 2.4L Theta II (181 hp). AWD optional throughout. Built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
Watch out: REAL ISSUE: The 2019-2021 facelift adoption of the 2.4L Theta II GDI dragged the Tucson into the same rod-bearing recall pattern as the Sonata and Santa Fe. The pre-facelift 1.6T DCT has its own DCT clunking and hesitation complaints, but it sidesteps the Theta family pattern. Check NHTSA before any purchase.
Modern Era
SoonHyundai Tucson
NX4 (4th Generation)
2022–2026 · NX4 · suv
Fourth-gen Tucson is a complete styling reset, with concealed LED daytime running lights that hide in the grille mesh until lit. US gets the long-wheelbase version exclusively. Lineup runs the 2.5L Smartstream GDI (187 hp), the 1.6L turbo hybrid (226 hp combined), and the 1.6L turbo plug-in hybrid (261 hp combined). N Line and XRT appearance trims sit above the standard SEL and Limited. Built at HMMA in Alabama.
Watch out: Smartstream-era engines have so far avoided the Theta-family recall mess. Early-build 2022 cars had some infotainment-screen software issues that have been addressed via OTA updates. Verify the latest software has been applied at the dealer.
