Radwood Era
1989-2001 (Suzuki Cultus-based)
1989–2001 · hatchback
Suzuki Cultus rebadged as a Geo (Chevrolet Metro after 1997). First-gen XFi trim ran the 1.0L 3-cylinder G10 making 49 hp, weighed under 1,700 lb, and returned EPA-rated 53 city/58 highway — numbers no production gasoline car has matched since. Second gen (1995-2001) added a 1.3L 4-cylinder and a sedan.
Watch out: 1.0L G10 head gasket failure is the model-defining repair, especially on high-mileage examples. Rust around the rear shock towers, wheel arches, and floor pans. Crash protection is minimal by modern standards — drive it knowing what it is.
1st Generation
1989–1998 · suv
Badge-engineered Suzuki Sidekick sold through GM's Geo brand (rebadged Chevrolet Tracker after 1997 when Geo was retired). Same 1.6L G16 four-cylinder, same body-on-frame architecture, same 2-door/4-door/convertible body styles. Sold in huge volumes through Chevy dealers and remains a common entry-level off-road platform.
Watch out: Same as the Sidekick — frame rust, soft-top deterioration, and underpowered stock engine. Parts interchange with Sidekick is essentially 1:1. Pre-1996 cars are OBD-I; 1996+ are OBD-II — matters for emissions and diagnostic compatibility.
