Modern Era
Single Generation (NF)
2017–2020 · NF · convertible
Built on the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 (ND) chassis, manufactured alongside the Miata at Mazda's Hiroshima factory. Differs from the MX-5 in engine (1.4L MultiAir turbo I4, 160hp Classica/Lusso; 164hp Abarth), retuned shocks, slightly longer body, and FIAT/Abarth-specific styling. Abarth final assembly happened in Turin with model-specific parts installed on the Japanese-built roadster. Discontinued 2020; 41,321 units built worldwide.
Watch out: MultiAir actuator unit failure on the 1.4L turbo — same internal solenoid oil-leak failure mode that affects every MultiAir-equipped FIAT and Alfa. The chassis itself is Miata-ND-grade reliable, but the FIAT-specific powertrain pulls the durability story down. Aftermarket support is thinner than the Mazda twin — many Miata mods don't bolt straight on.
US Market (Single Generation)
2012–2019 · 312 · hatchback
Built on a widened version of the Fiat Mini platform, front-wheel drive. US engines: 1.4L FIRE I4 (101hp) standard, 1.4L MultiAir TurboJet I4 (135hp Turbo, 160hp Abarth). The 500e electric variant (87-mile EPA range) was sold in California and Oregon from 2013-2019 as a compliance car. Earned IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2012 and 2013. The entire 500 line was discontinued in North America in September 2019.
Watch out: MultiAir actuator unit failure on 1.4L Turbo and Abarth cars — internal solenoid oil leak causes misfires, rough idle, and the dreaded P0300 code. Replacement is a top-of-engine job that's not cheap. Manual transmission cars have weak 3rd-gear synchros, and the Comfortmatic single-clutch automated manual (when fitted) is widely loathed.
Single Generation
2016–2023 · 334 · suv
Built on the FCA Small Wide 4x4 platform at the SATA Plant in Melfi, Italy — same factory and platform as the Jeep Renegade. North American engines: 1.4L MultiAir TurboJet I4 (FWD, manual only, through 2018) and 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir 2 I4 (180hp, FWD/AWD, 9-speed automatic). Discontinued in the US after 2023; remains on sale in Europe.
Watch out: 9-speed ZF 9HP transmission shudder on early cars — same launch-era issues as the Renegade and Cherokee KL. The 2.4L Tigershark has documented oil-consumption complaints (some owners burning a quart every 1,000 miles). The 1.4L Turbo's MultiAir actuator is also a known failure point.
