What transmission fluid does your car take?

Pick your car and get the exact transmission fluid spec it takes — the OEM ATF or CVT standard for your engine, plus any gotchas like a sealed or lifetime-fill unit. Every confirmed spec is cross-checked against two independent sources. Get this one right: the wrong fluid family is one of the few mistakes that can actually wreck a transmission, so match the spec before you pour.

Transmission fluid questions

How do I find what transmission fluid my car takes?
Pick your year, make, and model above. For cars we've confirmed, you get the exact OEM ATF or CVT spec per engine — cross-checked against two independent sources. The ultimate source of truth is your owner's manual or the dipstick/fill-cap marking. Never guess: matching the wrong fluid family is one of the few maintenance mistakes that can actually damage a transmission.
Can I use a universal or multi-vehicle ATF instead of the exact spec?
Sometimes, but read the bottle carefully. A multi-vehicle ATF is only safe if it explicitly lists your OEM spec (e.g. Dexron VI, Mercon LV, Toyota WS) among the standards it covers. CVT fluid, DCT fluid, and conventional ATF are not interchangeable — pouring CVT fluid into a conventional automatic, or vice versa, can destroy the unit. When in doubt, use the exact OEM-spec fluid.
Why does the same model show different fluids for different engines?
Because the transmission, not the badge, decides the fluid. One trim might use a CVT (taking a CVT fluid like HCF-2 or NS-3) while another uses a conventional automatic or a manual (taking ATF or a manual-transmission fluid). We list the spec per engine so you match the fluid to the exact drivetrain you have.
My transmission is 'sealed' or 'lifetime fill' — does that mean I never change it?
No. 'Lifetime' is the manufacturer's warranty-period assumption, not a guarantee for the life of the car. Many sealed transmissions still benefit from a fluid change, and there's still a correct spec to use when it's serviced. Where a transmission is sealed or dealer-only to service, we flag it in the notes so you know before you start.
Does CarCareTruth rank specific fluid brands?
The spec is a physical fact about your transmission, not a brand call. When we stock a reviewed fluid that meets the spec, we show our CCT score so you can judge it, but we never let an affiliate link change which fluid we tell you fits your car.
