CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 28, 2026
TL;DR OV/AG/P100 replacement cartridges for GVS Elipse OV/AG half-masks (SPR472, SPR473, SPR466, SPR467). The filter class covers organic vapor, acid gas, and P100 particulate — the right combination for paint prep, sanding, and rust converter work without cartridge swaps. No TC-84A approval number appears in the Amazon listing, leaving the NIOSH cert claim unverifiable. No manufacturer service-life specification is published. These two gaps are significant for a safety-critical consumable.
What it is and how it performs
These are replacement filter cartridges for GVS Elipse OV/AG half-mask respirators, sold as a pair covering both S/M and M/L mask bodies. Each cartridge combines activated carbon with a selected pore structure for organic vapor and acid gas adsorption, plus pleated P100 media for 99.97% oil-proof particulate filtration. Installation follows the individual mask body's user manual and involves pulling the strap tab and seating the housing. Community reviewers report easy breathing and satisfactory comfort during extended use. The cartridges are NOT compatible with the SPR457 P100-only mask body despite superficial similarity — the SPR457 uses an integral strap and glued inhalation valves that conflict with the OV cartridge's built-in valve design. At $39/pair the price is competitive against the 3M 60926 multi-gas + P100 cartridge ($45–55/pair), though the 3M includes verified TC-84A documentation the GVS listing does not provide.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Owners who already run a compatible GVS Elipse OV/AG mask body (SPR466, SPR467, SPR472, or SPR473) and need replacement cartridges. The filter class covers the realistic span of car-care exposures — paint-prep solvents, rust converters, and sanding particulate — in a single cartridge. Skip if starting fresh with a new respirator system: the 3M 60926 on a 6500 or 7502 body provides documented TC-84A verification and published service-life data that GVS does not currently provide for this listing. Also skip if you only own the SPR457 P100-only mask — these cartridges will not seat correctly without voiding NIOSH compliance.
Safety and environmental impact
No chemical or particulate hazard from handling the sealed cartridge in normal use — the filter media is enclosed in the housing. Spent cartridges carry adsorbed organic vapor, acid gas, and particulate chemistry from whatever was being filtered. Spent cartridges should be sealed in a plastic bag and disposed of according to local hazardous-waste guidance — they carry adsorbed chemistry from whatever was being filtered. Once removed from sealed packaging, the manufacturer-published shelf-life shrinks to roughly 6 months for OV cartridges — humidity degrades activated carbon between uses. Relying on taste or smell to detect breakthrough means the user has already had unprotected exposure. Track usage hours against the manufacturer's service-life spec, and change cartridges on a schedule. The plastic housing and bonded filter media are landfill-bound — no consumer take-back program is documented.
Frequently asked questions
Are GVS SPR474 cartridges compatible with the SPR457 P100 mask?▾
No. The SPR457 was designed for P100-only filters (SPR499) that use an integral strap assembly with glued inhalation valves. The SPR474 OV/AG P100 cartridges have inhalation valves built into the cartridge housing, which creates mechanical incompatibility. Multiple verified-purchase reviewers attempted force-fitting; GVS considers this a different respirator system. The compatible mask bodies for SPR474 cartridges are SPR466, SPR467 (OV/P100), SPR472, and SPR473 (OV/AG P100).
Does the GVS SPR474 have a NIOSH approval number?▾
The Amazon listing does not include a TC-84A NIOSH approval number in the title, feature bullets, or product description as of 2026-05-28. The product is listed in Amazon's PPE cartridge category, but the absence of a TC-84A number means the cert claim cannot be verified against the cdc.gov approval database. This is the primary documented weakness of this listing and drives the −1.0 health deduction and score 3 on the NIOSH approval verification dimension.
How long do GVS SPR474 cartridges last?▾
GVS has not published a manufacturer service-life specification for the SPR474 in any accessible documentation as of 2026-05-28. Industry convention for OV activated carbon cartridges is 8 hours of exposure at TLV-equivalent concentration, but this is not confirmed from GVS documentation. Without a published spec, the safe practice is to change cartridges after each significant OV-exposure session and to discard any cartridge that has been open longer than 6 months.

Easy breathing
Not cheap, but you get filters and new check valves. Read the instructions closely and examine the new filters before trying to remove the old filters from the respirator. Relatively easy once you figure how to pull the strap tab from the filter.
