A respirator cartridge is defined by its filter class and its mount. Filter class ranges from single-purpose (P100 particulate only, or organic vapor only) up through combination cartridges that add acid gas, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde coverage to particulate filtration in one unit. The mount is brand-specific: 3M's bayonet is the broadest ecosystem, fitting cartridges from multiple sellers, while Moldex, MSA Advantage, Honeywell North, and GVS Elipse each use a proprietary connection that only fits that brand's own mask body, so the cartridge you can buy is dictated by the respirator you already own.

So which cartridge is best? Match the filter class to the actual hazard first, and do not assume more coverage than the manufacturer states. 3M's 2097 adds only "nuisance level" organic vapor relief on top of its P100 particulate filtration; by 3M's own description that is not a rated organic-vapor cartridge and offers no protection above nuisance concentrations, so it is not the choice for real solvent work. After filter class, check the certification, because that is where this shelf splits hardest. Of the nine cartridges here, only three carry a NIOSH TC number we could independently confirm in the federal CEL database: 3M's 2091 P100 filter, Moldex's 7100 organic-vapor cartridge, and 3M's own 60926 multi-gas plus P100. The other six, including 3M's 60921 and 60923, either show no TC-84A number on the listing at all or show one we could not verify against cdc.gov at time of review, which is a documentation gap rather than proof the cartridge lacks NIOSH approval. None of the nine has an end-of-service-life indicator, so every one of them relies on a written change-out schedule, per OSHA 1910.134, rather than taste or smell, to know when it is spent. Once you know your filter class and confirm it fits your mask's mount, the deciding factor left is coverage breadth: a single-chemistry cartridge like the 2091 or 7100 costs less per pair but means swapping cartridges between tasks, while a multi-gas combination like the 60926 covers paint prep, sanding, and acid-based products in one cartridge at a higher per-pair cost.
