TL;DR Mild surfactant concentrate that handles fresh bugs and tar as part of a normal 2-bucket wash workflow with no harsh chemistry — but baked-on residue may need extended dwell or a follow-up product. Good fit for the home detailer who washes regularly and wants one product for the wash plus the bumper.
What it is and how it performs
This is a heavy-duty car wash shampoo that doubles as a bug and tar remover, sold as a 64 oz concentrate. Mix 1 oz per gallon for routine washing, 2-3 oz per gallon as a pre-wash spray for heavier residue. Spray, dwell briefly, then wash with the same product in a 2-bucket setup. Community on r/AutoDetailing and Autogeek broadly confirms effective single-pass cleaning on fresh bug residue and tar splatter at the recommended pre-wash dilution. Baked-on residue (multi-day weathered tar) is its honest limitation — for that, an aerosol cling-foam product clears faster. The dual-purpose value is real: one product handles weekly washing and bug season without a separate decontamination step.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Buy it if you wash your vehicle weekly to monthly and want a single product for the wash plus fresh bug and tar capability. Skip it if you mostly deal with weathered tar or baked-on residue — for that, a solvent-aerosol product (Stoner Tarminator, 3M 38983) clears the residue faster, accepting the petroleum-solvent chemistry trade-off.
Safety and environmental impact
The SDS assigns a WARNING signal word with H319 (serious eye irritation), H303 (acute oral toxicity Cat 5 — may be harmful if swallowed), and H313 (may be harmful in contact with skin) classifications driven by the sodium metasilicate alkaline builder and the surfactant package. No DANGER, no petroleum solvent, no aerosol propellant, no asthmagen, no Prop 65. The formula contains ethylene glycol monobutyl ether at low concentration — an aquatic toxicant flagged for the storm-drain pathway when the wash water rinses to driveway drain. No EPA Safer Choice certification or confirmed biodegradability.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a wash soap or a dedicated bug and tar remover?▾
Both. Chemical Guys positions CWS_104 as a heavy-duty car wash shampoo with bug and tar removal built in — buyers use it as their primary wash soap on heavily-soiled vehicles. For spot-treatment of baked-on tar, an aerosol product (Stoner Tarminator) works faster, but CWS_104 handles fresh bugs and tar splatter as part of normal weekly washing without the petroleum-solvent exposure trade-off.
What dilution should I use for bug and tar removal?▾
Chemical Guys recommends 1 oz per gallon of water for general washing. For heavy bug or tar residue, increase to 2-3 oz per gallon as a pre-wash spray, dwell briefly, then wash. Community on r/AutoDetailing reports good results at the standard wash dilution for fresh residue and the stronger pre-wash dilution for stuck-on residue.
Will it strip wax or sealant?▾
The alkaline pH and metasilicate builder can degrade some wax layers at the heavier-duty pre-wash dilution; community on r/AutoDetailing recommends keeping the wash dilution at 1 oz/gal on waxed vehicles. For ceramic-coated paint, the formula is generally compatible at standard dilution but avoid the heavier pre-wash strength to maintain coating hydrophobics.
Is it safe on plastic trim and rubber?▾
Yes at recommended dilution — community confirms it's safe on common plastic trim, rubber seals, and headlight lenses without the dehydration or blanching concerns associated with petroleum-solvent aerosols. The aqueous-surfactant chemistry doesn't have the trim-damage profile that solvent-based products carry.
Does it remove sap and bird droppings?▾
Fresh sap and bird droppings yes — within hours of deposition, normal wash strength clears them. For dried sap or etched bird-dropping residue (paint damage from acid attack), the wash chemistry helps but may not fully restore the surface; that requires polish or compound.

Removes Bugs 🐛 easy!
Great product. I live in the South and it’s love bug season. If you don’t remove them in 24 hours or so they will eat your paint. This stuff takes them right off with very little effort! Used a microfiber cloth and it does the trick. Recommend it!
