Hydrogenated Base Oil
- Base oils
- CAS 64742-94-5
- IUPAC: Distillates, petroleum, hydrotreated heavy paraffinic
Hydrogenated Base Oil (CAS 64742-94-5) appears in 1 of the 1,812 car-care products CarCareTruth tracks (as of June 2026). It is classified as a VOC.
SDS §3 note: 'The classification as a carcinogen does not apply as it can be shown that the substance(s) contain(s) less than 3% DMSO extract as measured by IP 346.' Hydrotreated to remove carcinogenic PAH fraction. Primary exposure pathway in aerosol use is inhalation of volatile fractions. Not Prop 65 listed.
Hydrogenated base oil (CAS 64742-94-5, Distillates petroleum hydrotreated heavy paraffinic) is a severely hydrotreated petroleum fraction used as a carrier solvent in aerosol cleaning products. Hydrotreating removes or reduces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that would otherwise trigger H350 carcinogen classification — this is why SDS documents for products using this ingredient often carry the clarification note that the carcinogen classification does not apply when DMSO extract testing confirms less than 3% by IP 346 method.
As a heavy paraffinic fraction it provides solvency for petroleum-based deposits (varnish, carbon, oxidized oil) and delivers the active cleaning chemistry to carburetor passages and induction surfaces. It is not biodegradable but is also not classified as acutely toxic to aquatic organisms at the mixture level.

Common questions about Hydrogenated Base Oil
- What is Hydrogenated Base Oil used for in car care?
- Hydrogenated (severely hydrotreated) petroleum base oil fraction used as a primary carrier solvent in aerosol cleaning products, including induction-system and carburetor cleaners. Hydrotreating reduces the aromatic content of the raw petroleum fraction, lowering carcinogenicity classification risk vs. non-hydrotreated counterparts.
- Is Hydrogenated Base Oil a VOC?
- Yes. Hydrogenated Base Oil is classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC).
- Is Hydrogenated Base Oil on California's Proposition 65 list?
- No. Hydrogenated Base Oil is not on California's Proposition 65 list.

They describe the ingredient itself; whether a hazard applies to a finished product depends on its concentration and how it's used.
