Extech Instruments was founded in 1971 in Waltham, Massachusetts as a manufacturer of portable test and measurement equipment for trades, industrial maintenance, and inspection work. The brand was acquired by FLIR Systems in 2007 and now operates as a sub-brand of Teledyne FLIR LLC after Teledyne's 2021 acquisition of FLIR Systems.
The Extech product line spans multimeters, environmental meters, IR thermometers, anemometers, sound level meters, and the CG series of coating thickness gauges. Extech instruments are positioned in the prosumer and light-industrial tier — above budget imports, below dedicated metrology brands like Defelsko, Elcometer, and Erichsen. Calibration services are available through Teledyne FLIR for instruments returned for periodic verification.
