Aquapel started as a PPG Industries development and is now owned and distributed by Pittsburgh Glass Works LLC, a Pittsburgh-based automotive glass supplier. The brand holds patents on fluoroalkylsilane chemistry that bonds directly to the glass surface rather than coating it, producing water repellency that typically outlasts conventional silicone-based competitors by several months.

The product is sold primarily through auto parts chains and online as a single-use applicator: a foam pad pre-saturated with the treatment. It has a strong following in the detailing and auto enthusiast community as a higher-durability alternative to Rain-X, particularly valued for reliable highway sheeting. The trade-off is a higher per-application cost and a one-shot applicator format that requires more careful technique than a pump spray.
