Volkswagen Touareg 1st Generation (7L)
2004–2010 · 7L · suv
First-generation Touareg shared its platform with the first Porsche Cayenne (955/957) and was a serious off-road-capable luxury SUV at a Volkswagen price. 3.2L V6 / 3.6L VR6 / 4.2L V8 / 5.0L V10 TDI diesel (the famous one). Heavy, capable, complex. The V10 TDI is a unicorn — slow-selling at launch, now a cult collectible.
Watch out: V8 cars: same coolant-pipe failure issue as Cayenne 955/957 V8s — plastic pipes in the engine valley fail, aluminum retrofit is the standard fix. V10 TDI: extremely expensive to service when something goes wrong; specialist shops only. Air suspension wear is universal.
