Volkswagen Golf Mk6 (5K)

2010–2014 · 5K · hatchback

The Mk6 Golf (chassis 5K) was VW's volume compact hatch in the US from MY2010 to MY2014, sold in two-door and four-door body styles. It rode on a refined version of the PQ35 platform carried over from the Mk5, with tidier styling and a quieter cabin. US base cars ran the 2.5L inline-five making around 170 hp, while the 2.0L TDI common-rail diesel was the efficiency pick before the 2015 emissions scandal complicated diesel ownership. Transmissions were a 5-speed manual or 6-speed manual, a 6-speed torque-converter automatic on the 2.5, and the DSG dual-clutch on the TDI. It sat below the sportier GTI Mk6 in the lineup and gave way to the MQB-based Mk7 for MY2015.

Watch out: The 2.5L five-cylinder is durable but heavy on fuel and known for ignition-coil failures and a stretch-prone timing chain on higher miles. TDI cars carry the diesel-emissions-recall history and require diligent DPF and intake-carbon attention, and the DSG dual-clutch needs its scheduled fluid-and-filter service to avoid mechatronic trouble. Interior trim and window-regulator wear are common on aging cars.
