Mk4 Golf moved to the PQ34 platform with much-improved interior quality. Engines from 2.0L base to 1.8T (GTI) and 3.2L VR6 (Mk4 R32, 2003-2004 in NA). The R32 is the collector pick — first US-market Golf R-line car, 6-speed manual standard, ~5,000 imported.

Watch out: 1.8T sludging concern on cars run on incorrect oil (synthetic 502.00 spec is mandatory; conventional oil destroys the turbo and engine). Timing belt service on 1.8T and 2.0L is non-negotiable — interference engine. R32 VR6 is generally durable but heavy on the front end; expect front-tire and CV-joint wear.
